I really wanna build a rally car and Ive been looking at all the rally car builds and i just wanna get an idea on what car would be a good car to use for a rally car build

I pulled this from a post TURTLE made to kick off what they do here in Colorado. Lots of good info in there.

TURTLE said:
16/18th scale class, this would be for Traxxas (Rally, etc.), Associated (RC18R, etc.), Duratrax(vendetta, etc.) style vehicles

10th scale class, for Tamiya (DF03Ra, TA03RS, TA03R, TB02, TB01, FF02, TA05, TT01, MAo3, M05Ra), HPI (RS4 rally), Associated (TC3), Traxxas electric 4tec, Kyosho (DRX, Fazer EP rally), etc.

Sounds like there have been guys showing up with tweaked on-road touring cars (increased belly height, longer travel shocks and tamiya rally block tires) and having a great time with the close racing.

The DF-03ra is probably your best bet. Unlike most, it's based on a buggy, so it's a little more off-road worthy outta the box...

so here's a question, in the 1/16 and 1/18 class, what would be the max belly clearance, and also, would there be a mandate for rally tires there? or would a block style buggy tire be acceptable. reason i ask these questions is that i have a vendetta buggy, and it looks pretty non scale with touring car rally wheels. also, would the maximum course width change?

Was looking into the df03ra, and getting ready to buy one. Did a little research and chatted with some of our local rally nuts and ended up getting the tb-01 lancer evo rally. It's a rally specific car from the word go, but was discontinued 4-5 years ago. I'll probably regret having a discontinued car, but parts are available if you look hard enough.

The df03ra is based on the dark impact 4wd off-road chassis...lots of cool upgrades and parts availability.

Not sure, It's just a group of guys getting together and throwing some loose rules together to group cars by scale/class and keep everything fun. Tires and belly heights try to level the playing field and keep everything fair. They also run "dakar style" trucks and the hpi mini trophy desert trucks in seperate classes. The hpi mtdt is a stock class, they keep stock tires, but allow basic radio/esc/motor swaps...more for reliability than anything.

I say get some guys with similar cars together and go kill some battery packs.

well this is just for my own fun mostly, just wanted to check on the rules

these are the vendetta rally tires, pretty damn weak

mainly looking to drop the vendetta rally body onto the buggy, the chassis is the same, and use the buggy body as an undertray. i've got an acre of free land and a shovel, come spring something is getting dug up, was planning on sticking to the 20 inch rule to begin with, but the vendetta has a wheelbase of only 6.3 odd inches. suppose a guy could put up pipe or something to cut down the width and make it more scale in width. there are a couple guys with touring cars around here, and if you build it, they will come.

yeah, this little vendetta is my hobby away from my hobby lol. looking at things, about a 12 wide track about 40 feet long would be more than enough to push this thing through its paces....just have to get the body and bumper now.

Yeah what Stan said. There are several options for rally cars out there you just need to know what to look for. From all my research though the DF03RA and TB01 are the best ones I could find.

To me there are a couple things that are extremely important in a rally car, durability, shaft driven, and equal weight balance. The DF03RA and TB01 both have the first two, but only the TB01 has better weight distribution, not that it can not be "fixed" in the DF03RA.

I suggest taking a look at my DF03RA thread and my TB01 thread, they will give you a good idea of what the cars are and the pros and cons of each car.

The hard facts:
DF03RA-
-in production since 2008/2009-current
-based on the DF03 dark impact 4 wheel drive buggy
-Plastic ball differentials
-aluminum center shaft
- under bodies available (dark impact)
- weight all in the back of the chassis
-built to be a 4 wheel drive buggy and then converted to a rally car

TB01
-Discontinued was in production from 2001(?) to 2008.
-matching Metal differentials with spider gears
-steel center shaft
-bathtub chassis
-under bodys available
-equal weight balance
-built from the ground up to be a touring car/rally car

If you have any questions let me know."thumbsup"

Guys don't forget the TA01/TA02 Chassied rally cars they made. There are rollers available on ebay for cheap. Parts are still available on most web sites and of course ebay. I have converted a TA02-1 or whatever it is Hummer into a 1/8 scale "crawler" H2 with the Radioshack H2 body, 2.2 wheels and Imex g-hawgs. So drivetrain is tough. I later reconverted it into a mini trophy type truck with 1.9ers and talller off road tires. http://www.scale4x4rc.org/home/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=52/

As far as a "overbody" or something o keep rocks out of the chassis, you can take the bare chassis, cut the rear nub where the top plate the MSC usually mounts to and trace a clear or whaterver material you like cover. I just removed that mount, cut the nubs and am 95% enclosed. Only thing is that in the front you have to mold the plate a little so that the driveshaft does not rub.

This is all good info. A DF-03 is a great choice from what I've read. Personally, I have a TT-01 drifter. It's the one in the Pearl Orange Subi thread. So far I love it. Out of the box it is fun and dependable. There are tons of rally car conversion tutorials on line. Parts are everywhere. It does have a few cons like weight and suspension slop but you could probably build a new TT-01 rally car for around $200.

On another note, dang that active price is cheap! Anyone order from them before?
