Rat Hunting... need some advice...

I need to find myself a feral cat of some kind... A real mouser... Now that my dog is gone, this is a real posibilty. Though, I need immediate action.

I'd rather get this done w/o animal control...

Thanks again for all the ideas. I keep picturing though me out there waiting with like 20 traps in front of his hole and it turning into some kind of cartoon.

I've got plenty of ferel cats for yah... I use them for target practice with the bb gun and the dang things keep coming back. It to the point my wife said I can start shooting to kill...

Back to your problem, what ever you catch take pic so we can see. I highly recommend poison in the trap as a big rat will make short work of a hf trap.

Pics for sure. Though like I said before, I really want to avoid poison. I don't want a dead animal where I can't get to it to remove it and you don't smell them soon enough before the maggots are everywhere. I believe it's the maggots that produce an amonia type smell.

OK - Going to try a couple more nights with what I have.

Trap #1 - armed with peanut butter and facing the doorway to his home. The brown looking stuff on top is his blood from this morning.

Trap #2 - thinking here is, I bet they used to go after the dog food when I fed my dog. So I bet he'll feel safe going after some. Well not this time! I got a large rat trap in it armed with peanut butter covered with peanuts and dogfood.

Hoping tonight will be the night. I think the first trap I will spray with some WD-40 to hopefully repel any smell that may warn him off.

I used to live on a farm, blue death rat poison is the best crap you can get for killing them. They eat it like it is candy and it dries them up like a chunk of cardboard.

Could always stick a hose down his home and whack him with a shovel when he comes swimming out.

I had a simalar problem hear, the little barsteds would go around the rat traps. I ended up getting a possum trap http://www.derwenttraders.com.au/in...et=d129.html&gclid=CIah0dHmjp8CFQoiagodSh8mmQ

This one work really good for me i had to change the way it trigers so ensted of it going off when it pulls the bait i changed it so when the rat pushes the bait it gos off, once i had done this the first night i got four in one go the father and three baby ( thay were biger the a mouse ).
Then over a couple of days got the rest 12 in total. I found the best bait is a apple but peal it it works a treat.

Good luck trapping."thumbsup" If those don't work, you might need to check into a trap such as one used to catch raccoons and possum. I think somewhere you said you would rather not use a gun to rid the critter. I just wanted to throw out a suggestion if you do decide to use a firearm. Here are 3 kinds of .22 ammo that are low velocity and are no louder that a toy cap gun. The Remington and the CCI rounds are the quietest and the Aguila round packs a 60gr bullet.

if its a rat that trap is in not such a good place. rats follow the edges of the walls. i would put the trap rite up against the wall down a bit from the hole, jaw in so they walk through it.

if its a possum it will be white with a grey face. about the size of a cat. a rat on roids.

Morning Update:

Went out before work to get all the trash cans to the curb and check things out. The T-Rex type trap is gone. No where to be found. I walked around the yard a little with my mag light and couldn't find it. Though it was about 5:45 this AM, so it was still hard to see anything, even with the mag light. I do live on a half-acre so I could cover it all. The backyard which this is taking place in, is chainlink fenced all the way around. There is maybe one or two points I could see him getting through with the trap on him.

The dog bowl trap was untouched it appears.

Tonight when I get home, I will check out the yard more and see if I can find it or both maybe. Perhaps this rat is 'The Brain' or some shit and just took the trap and hid it on me...

Rats are almost blind. They follow walls with their whiskers so any traps need to be put perpindicular to their paths so they walk over it. Pro exterminators don't usually put any bait on rat traps as they can't see it. But they also can't see a trap sitting in their path. You can usually find their paths as they pee constantly. You will see a wet trail wherever they run.

Well I must have got something as the black T-Rex trap is MIA this morning. Can't wait to get home and scour the yard for it.

twisted is right about them following walls. No bait is best. Chain link fence is not going to stop a rat or possum. They can it through a baseball sized hole or smaller.

I meant that he couldn't get through the chainlink fence w/the trap attached to him. Yeah, w/o it, he could get through easy.

sounds like to me, my friend. you need to listen to some old Jerry Clower tapes/cd's about 'a rat killing' LMAO

Victory is MINE!!!

This is how it went down. Got home from work and was able to go search for it.

I looked near the garage where the activity was, but no dice, nothing there. I continued counter-clockwise around the yard. Since I have been doing the addition and stuff, my backyard is all dirt and I have misc. crap all over. Well, I have this old concrete table that I have not set back up as it's a PITA to do so and will probably get moved again, and I really should just get rid of it. Well, I noticed the trap tucked up under part of it.

I tried to pull the trap out, but saw the tail move and he was stuck under there pretty good. Like I said, he's a smart one though. He knew I was going to have to lift and being concrete, it's heavy as hell, plus the 5 blown discs in my back. Needless to say, I wasn't able to lift it too high or for too long, but high and long enough for him to scoot under it further will the trap still attached. I tried to find some things to hold the table up, but wasn't succesful enough and the table came down on the trap just enough to free him! ****!

So the bastard takes off, not too fast, to behind the old pool shed between it and the fence. I run around the other way, he sees me, and then he darts into the pool shed through the hole where the discharge pipe came through. Now he's in the shed. I go around to the doors and start moving things trying to locate him. I go to move the lawn mower and he jets off back through the hole he came in. Damn it! I run back outside to try to get him with the shovel, but he runs back into the shed.

Now, I am like, he's going to chill until I go back in there and start moving shit again. So this time before going back in, I grab the T-Rex, arm it, and place it in front of the hole. Well, I started to remove everything from the shed. Shovels, rakes, axes, power wheel, lawn mower, etc. Finally I see him, he's chill out by the old pool pump near the side of the shed. I go to the pump and he starts freaking out. Yes bastard! I see you and you will die! So now I have a shovel in hand, rat running around in the shed, and before I could strike him, he goes to run back out through the hole he came in. BAMN! Goodnight **** face! Zed's dead baby.

Looks like the other morning I got his tail. Looks like this morning I got his leg.

Now that I got this one, I will be getting some more traps and as suggested, placing them all around the house facing the foundation. I'll also put one in the pool shed near that hole since the shed is only temporary storage until I am done w/the house and ready to build a real shed.

Thanks everyone here for their suggestions and support. I feel as if all'y'all had some help in nailing this hairy ****er.
