RC parts needs and Amazon

Hi all!

I am a typical male, and really don't enjoy going out and shopping. I will say that if I can get everything that I need in one store, all the better. So if I go to Target and can get bath towels and bread, that's a perfect scenario.
The same kind of goes for my RC needs. I am an Amazon Prime member. So if I can go on Amazon and get my school books, and SSD steering links, than that again is a perfect scenario for me.

Is this a newb mistake? Do others do this? Shooters preference (meaning what ever floats your boat)? I'm just looking to spark conversation. Also if I am spending more going through Amazon, I'd like to learn my lesson.
One thing that I will say, since buying my star, is that I would like to buy more from our vendors on this site. But that is simply to keep money here local with our own kind.

Thanks!

Howdy Don,
Amazon would probably be ok for say a kit to start your journey.
But,,, if ya want to upgrade your new rig with parts that are "specific" to crawlers the vendors here on the forum have just about any / everything you could imagine and they are for the most part tried and true for our specific niche in the rc world.
Crawlers are a whole different animal than any other type of rc vehicles.
We may drive slow but we stress our rigs and parts to the limits of their designs.
We tear crap up .

Well my opinion on this matter is if I can get somthing at my local hobby shop I will but if the item I'm in need of is not carried by my local shop then I will go online to get it but I love keeping business local as much as I can

I agree with you 110%. I am a going to start to search these forums for what I need first (since I don't have a hobby shop in the town where I live currently), then go to the internet machine if I can't find it here.

When I get to San Antonio, I will have plenty of places to shop.

Thanks you guys for your feed back!

I tend to order from RPP Hobby. They ship fast, have excellent service and there's always a 10% off coupon available.

I have a personal hatred towards Amazon. I don't shop there unless I'm forced to.

I rely on Tower Hobbies and eBay. I can find pretty much everything I need there for cheaper than Amazon and it comes to my door in less than a week without paying to be a member of Prime.

RPP Hobby used to be my go-too site until their shipping prices became outrageous.

i go to my local hobby shop whenever i know its something they have (paint, deans connectors, rod ends, etc.) but for major electronics and parts i look on amazon first (i also have prime) for things like batteries, chargers, and "a cheap 4 channel radio set". if i cant find what i need on amazon, i go to a site like RPP or asiatees.
if its a specialty item like a winch controller i will go straight to heyok on here.

bottom line, i will always go to the little guy first. i try not to go to amazon unless its something faceless like that 4 ch remote, but if i can find it elsewhere and support the little guy, i do it.

I can't remember the last time my RPP order was under $150. Free shipping after that. The vast majority of my shopping is done with RPP. The remainder is mostly eBay and a very small amount at my LHS depending if I feel like answering a bunch of dumb questions from the new kid working there.

I use RPP as well but have used Amazon a good bit too, what it boils down to for me is Amazon doesn't really offer that much and shipping is slow, "next day shipping, sure, let me just take 3 days to post it now"
RPP has spoiled me!

RPP is an option when I order a lot, but never for small orders. Even on large orders RPP often gets beat by Tower in terms of price. Tower also has a lower minimum for free shipping.

That's what people don't understand about Amazon. Even with Prime their free 2 day shipping can be delayed and it's surely not guaranteed.

RPP is like next hour shipping. I swear I get a shipping notification within the hour after my order(s). However, I've spent way too much there this month :(

RPP seems to carry a lot of SSD products as well, which is my fav right now. Good to know you all, thank you.

Amazon is a pita and shipping is kinda whenever.

Tower is ok, but there shipping has never been that great for me, dunno why they don't ship faster, plus the time in their warehouse queue.

RPP Hobby has been very fast shipping, great selection, shipping went up, but I have parts in 3 days or less!

Ebay usually has good price and shipping if you look around and much better overall than Amazon.

LHS depends on which store, only one really good one and they can be out of stuff for weeks sometimes because the 'dedicated' ordering person for that area is not doing their job. If I want it now, I try LHS first.

Odd factoid I saw the other day - Tower now carries Vanquish (a selection).

I dont use RPP unless I have to, the shipping is high and I have never gotten an order any less than 5 days...I guess crossing the Mississippi river takes a couple extra days...I read on their site where a dude in Australia got his order in a week! and it takes 5 days to get to Indiana? Go figure...

I have only used Amazon Canada once and it was a very bad experience.

Most of the crawler related items are extremely overpriced... but I digress.

I am a contractor and I noticed one of my clients was always getting Amazon packages delivered. He said he had prime and if I ever needed anything to let him know. I ended up ordering a Duratrax stand and two pairs of GMade steelies.

Both were "ships from and sold by Amazon.ca" and each included free 2 day shipping with Prime.

The stand came 2 days later as expected. The wheels took over two, closer to three - weeks.

The way my customer explained it was that they likely didnt have the item in stock but Amazon didn't realize that until after we had ordered - as at the time of ordering it said they had two in stock.

Anyway, I've stuck with Ebay or one of my LHS's since then.

I tried to use amazon to buy one of those tri-pods that can hold a camera, and follows a sensor that Can be mounted inside an R/C, but it wouldn't ship cause it has a lipo power source, and lipos Can't be shipped to Canada from the states.

I used RPP to order all the VP parts that are on my bomber...back when the shipping was more manageable, can't say I'll be ordering for them anytime soon though.

Amain has always been my go to for large orders, they're closer to the Canadian border, and as of late it seems that amains shipping is always half of RPP shipping cost.

For items that can't be had from the bigger shops I shop here on RCC (TSS, DMG, RCBros).

Nothing has ever appeared at my post office any less than 16 days!

I use Amazon for odds and ends that the LHS doesn't carry. In particular I order Common Sense LEDs off of their (can't order direct for some reason), hook-up wire, and some parts. You just need to pay attention to what you are ordering. I have seen bulk Deans plugs there, and Deans does not sell in bulk; reading the actual description it said "Deans-style plugs", which basically means knock-offs.

Overall I have had a good experience with ordering, everything comes in a couple of days and I have not had the wrong parts, missing parts, or broken parts. With that, this last order my wife added in a coffee mug that arrived in pieces.

I was wondering when that was going to happen. Hopefully we can use Tower coupons on them. Coupons work on Vanquish items at RPP. Hopefully Vanquish doesn't pull a Traxxas here and nix coupons.

Perhaps there's just something about your particular shipping line that causes a hold up. I know RPP still uses USPS or whomever but I'm still amazed that 9/10 times my package shows up on the east coast in 2 days.

I only use Amazon when the part is on Prime, otherwise I stick with whatever other source might have it.
