Recommended Sensored Brushless Systems for crawling/trailing

Am considering going brushless on my SCX10 Trail truck.

I do not do Comps. I mostly trail run and our trails do include crazy tough sections that need the entire range of power from slow creeping to strong bursts.

I have read a lot about Brushless setups, but thought it a good idea to get those of you who have already gone through the learning curve to post what you ended up with that worked well.

So please...post up what motor/ESC combo you run, and the associated cost. I already see some commonalities.

Not asking for detailed discussions of your combos....just list them and make short comment of the strngth or weakness of your combo for general trail crawling.

I have had a few combos in my SCX10 so far.

First: Tekin RS with Trinity D3 17.5 motor, I couldn't tell you the cost since these were old electronics I pulled out of other cars.
Pros - Plenty of wheel speed on 3s, good torque, good low speed control, ran cool even with hours of continuous running
Cons - Frequently the Tekin ESC would have an issue detecting neutral after applying the brakes and I would have to push the trigger up 3-4 times before reverse would engage, poor low speed control in reverse, most spec class racing motors (like my Trinity) have a good amount of timing built into them so they don't like to be run in reverse for extended periods
Second: Tekin RS with Tenshock X211 motor, again the Tekin was a used leftover but the Tenshock motor was about $65
Pros - The motor has much more torque compared to the Trinity since it is a 4 pole design, low speed control was even smoother, the motor has no timing so it can be ran in either direction
Cons - The Tekin spontaneously died on me one day, no idea if it was related to the new motor (no heat or smoke, just stopped working)
Third: Hobbyking X-Car 120A with Tenshock X211 motor, same motor but the ESC was about $30
Pros: ESC is cheap and reliable (it is a clone of the Hobbywing V2.1 120A ESC), it can be programmed using official Hobbywing software and can even be flashed with Hobbywing firmware to enable additional programming options, handles powerful motors on 3s with no problem
Cons: You can't change motor rotation with any of the firmware options, footprint is much larger than the Tekin

I run a ROC 412 2300kv on 2S with a Hobbywing 10BL60-Sensored.

I got the motor used for 80$ because of the ease of waterproofing a sealed can sensored motor (Kinda hard to find a low speed sensored closed can motor)
The combo ran great, but the ESC froze 2 times in very cold weather. We are talking -15°C and below.

For a 2S setup, it's pretty good, but would perform better on 3S and a lower pinion gear.


I also run a cheap SkyRC Cheetah 1600kv sensored setup on a Losi Night Crawler on 3S and the combo is flawless, but not waterproof.

I'm looking to waterproof my ROC 412, I thought unlike regular brush-less motors the sensor has to be waterproofed.
I was thinking about acrylic conformal coating but not sure how to go about it.

HH Trailmaster BL motors can be conformal coated straight from HH. Less cost and a better crawler motor.
Couple that with a tekin RS, MMP, or the soon HH brushless esc, you can have it all!
