Religulous ~

The stuff about higher intelligence starts at like 1:20 or so. its his last thought/encore thing.
soo good.

I've heard him tell that one a few times. My only gripe with NDT is that his spiel cycle is too short.

But I do really like his 2% theory, its quite a thing to try to wrap your head around.

Here's my deep thought of the day...NDT mentioned how scientific growth in the Islamic community was brought to a near standstill because of a religious doctrine. The same thing happened during the Dark Ages, though I believe that actually set us back in our scientific knowledge instead of just stunting its growth. In more recent times, we have faith based home schooling promoting a 6000 yr old Earth and Creationism.

Add to that what people always say about religion being used as a form of control.

What if...and it is a definite "if", whoever or whatever our Creator or ancestors were, set up religion as a way to keep us distracted away from the truths of the universe and to keep our focus on ourselves and our own lonely little planet. Maybe as a way to keep us reigned in, maybe its for our own good.

Any of the mainstream religions have their hardcore, hardline, uber pious followers who in one form or another shun technology and science. The Muslims, the Christians, the Jews, they've all got their little groups of people that live 1000 years in the past.

that's a really interesting perspective, although i don't think it's really the reason for it. if you look at all the gods from history, most of them were used to describe something and make sense out of something the people of that time couldn't understand. take zeus for example--people didn't have an explanation for lightning, so they explained it by saying there was a man in the sky throwing lightning bolts down to punish them, but now we have a perfectly good explanation for lightning and therefore no one(or very few people) believe in zeus.

i think as time goes on, religions have to try harder and harder to justify their belief systems since there are less and less things for them to have to explain. i see religion as just a big "god of the gaps" or argument from ignorance explanation. i am perfectly content if i don't know something to say that i don't know rather than making knowledge claims based on untestable claims.

Something to believe in,
Why do I feel better about life after church on Sundays?
simple. you go and sing and/or listen to songs, hear someone talk, and communicate with people that care(possibly disingenuously) and that's a very primal human need. i feel the same after getting together with people that i care about.

that just goes back to what i said before, god of the gaps/argument from ignorance. just because you don't know the answer to something, doesn't mean there's a supernatural explanation.
