Between a rock and a hard spot!
Ok this might be a shock to some but I have a winner and no one herewould guess what what tire is. I would put money on it!

That said I have a lot of 40 series tires from proline to losi and RC4WD to Traxxas series tires.

The winner of the tire shoot out looks alot like the the Axial BFG tires found on the Yeti XL but these are bigger and softer.

Drum roll Please.... Exceed RC 98101 40 Series 3.8 Tires w/ Foams 1/8 MaxStone Super Rock Crawler
Here is the best part other than the out standing performance as a rock crawler tire. The price 40.00 on ebay will get you 4 tires and the foams! You will want the wide beadlock rims for these Mudslinger sized tires.

So what tires are really good tires for rock crawling that I have and tested

1) Exceed 98101
2) RC4wd Rok Lox
3)Pit Bull XL( Needs softer foams to be #3)
4)Proline Trenchers
5)Rc4WD Mudslingers

These are the top five tires that I have picked. I also like the 3.2 Losi Claws and the Traxxas summit tires and they also are a good choice.
Axial has some nice tires that they sell on the XL kit and the RTR but the compound is not soft enough to be on this list.

Here are some pictures of some of the tires tested. I have more in storage.

These to buggies 2 buggies have the top 2 tires for rock crawling on them.
Here are some of the tires that was tested.

So that said lets talk pricing of these tires
the winner buy far is the Pit Bull tires at 55.00 a set and you have to buy soft foams to make them a great rock crawler tire. #2 goes to the RC4WD Rok Lox 45.00 a set and 3rd goes to the RC4WD Mudslingers @ 39.00 a set.
Cheapest tires goes to the Exceed tires at 40.00 for all 4 tires.

I bet you want proof Well I making a video that will do just that. If you have seen any of my other videos of late you will know these rocks and what some of the other tires have been doing.

So after doing the test video that you see above I inspected the condition of the wheels and tires and found 3 of the Beadlock wheels broken on the outside bead. The plastic cup is very thin and it doesn't hold up well at all. So to give these tires the rims that I have yet to break I'm mounting them to 1/5 scale beadlock rears (wide) rims.

I picked up another complete set of tires to play with. I ordered some different off set wheels to get the wider stance that I like. I got the wheels in white so that I can die them green.

Hey AWESOME write up !! Wish I read it 5 days ago before I bought my slingers.. I'm sure I'll still be happy with them... And It looks like I'll be picking up a set of Exceed 98101 "thumbsup" thanks !!

With that being said... (probably) not many people modify their tires.... I think a MOD VS STOCK shoot out would be cool as well... maybe someday "thumbsup"

The tires you have are very good. They have a thick side wall so a soft foam is better in soft slow speed driving If high speeds are what your after such as mud, them the stiffer foam would be fine. I run no foams because of the 1/5 beadlock I have a soft center wit stiff sidewalls. It is a very good tire this way but is by no means stock after doing this to them.

I noticed the foam was HARD and was contemplating on running with no foam with the beadlocks...

I would think that would work as long as the beadlock holds up to the extra stress that will be impacted on it. I found that the plastic 40 series wheels will not. It is why I use 1/5 beadlock rims. They hold up to the bashing and the weight of the Buggies in hard roll overs and landings.

When you figure out how to cut and mount the 3.8 tire to the 1/5 rim you will need to use a 24 or 23mm hex adapter to use these wheels.

Don't look at other adapters because the wheels are thicker and you need extra thread to mount the wheel nut to the hex adapter. These have that to mount 1/5 beadlock rims.
If it is not a 8mm shaft that your mounting the wheel adaptwer but the Traxxas size 6mm them the HPI Savage 24mm wheel adapter is what your looking for.
