You need to spend some time around my house...

How big are you thinking? Does it have to be 4wd? Its not hard to build a clod style axle with a belt drive or you could use a golf cart rear and modify it with some farm equipment ujoints for the front axle.

Yes, I know I'm bringing up an old post but its something that has been in the back of my mind since I read this. Here is the route I would take given proper funds and tools. I would start off with an independant suspension 4 wheeler and use the diffarentials and hubs to make the axles kinda like the "maxx" style and the engine/gearbox. Why? First reason is durability. It's going to take a hefty wheel to ride around in the rocks and that is going to take a hefty driveline to spin them. I just dont see golf cart parts standing up to anything that is going to move on the rocks. Second is reliability. I havent been around golf carts much but I dont think an electric motor has any benifit over running a gas engine. Aslo most 4wheeler engines are attatched to the gearbox which is one less part to deal with. Third is parts availibility. If you know where to look golf parts are easy to come by but what if you want to upgrade to something stronger? You may be able to find a wrecked 4wheeler to start with. Here is one site that deals with them. http://www.crashedtoys.com/

I figure it is going to take a ton of fab either way, but the 4wheeler way would be much more durable.

There was a guy on Pirate a long time ago who built his kid a mini-buggy....he used Yota axles and 31's....

"Kid buggy" was an awesome build... he used a honda motor turned sideways if I remember correctly.

The atv based rig inst that bad of an idea... I have seen a few bayou's on cl latly for 500 or less. They are of course trashed but, the suspension and driveline is usually good. Put in a golf cart motor and a couple deep cycles and you have a wisper quiet rig.
