I wanna be Dave
So a few years ago my cousin (a New Orleans native like yours truly) went to Pamplona, Spain to do the Running of the Bulls. Well, he had a blast and came home thinking how cool it would be to bring this event to New Orleans. Sounds crazy, right? :ror: Well, he talked it over with a few of his friends and they put a plan together. They planned a route through the French Quarter in the heart of New Orleans. But obviously, there's no way they could get bulls to chase people through city streets. So they came up with a great idea!
They had contacts with the Big Easy Rollergirls so they asked them to put horns on their helmets and smack people with plastic bats as they skate through the crowd! The girls thought it was a great idea and even got another couple teams to join them. It was official, NOLA Bulls was formed and ran for the first time just a couple years ago in '07!
I believe their first year had 100-125 participants. In '09 my g/f and I made the trip back home to run in it. Estimations were that it'd grown to well over 1000 participants....a ten-fold increase in 2 years! Rumors are that last year the numbers may have surpassed 4000 runners!! I hear they're going to have 400 roller derby girls this year. They also had to alter the course to accommodate the ever increasing number of people participating and watching.
Here's their website: http://www.nolabulls.com/index.asp?id=10
The run is on July 9th this year and we're driving in from Austin again for it. And this time we're bringing a bunch of people with us! If any of you are in the area and going to be there, hit me up. It's a damn good time and a great excuse to drink heavily at 7am in one of the funnest cities in the world!
There's tons of videos on youtube, though I have yet to find any that really capture what it's like. Just search for Running of the Bulls Nueva Orleans or something like that and you'll get a taste of what it's like. If you see any footage from '09 look for me. I'm the one wearing all white with a red bandana!
