Well, since everybody (including me!) was not too happy with the outcome of the first rubbers, I tried another idea: This time I used a thinner rubber mat (still ribbed), cut the stripes (which is a PITA by the way without the stabilizing styrene underneath), and glued them on directly. Yes, CA. At the moment with just one drop at the beginning and end, since I am not too happy with the cuts. I sanded it afterwards, which did not make it better, wheen looking at a short distance.

Now for the pictures:
Here is the overall view. Now much better sizewise:

And here is a detail shot. Since the rubber under the doors is wider, I cut 3 stripes of the mat, then cut the middle one out. And sanded that as well. Now beware for the detail shot:

So I wonder what you say when you see this....

Today arrived the last package from the company where I ordered the prototype parts. This was the most interesting part, but took the most time since its "printed" in stainless steel! Don's ask me how they were doing this. Maybe google is your friend here as well ;)

This is the axle housing that was shown in the last picture with the prototype parts as a laser sinter part. This was nice, but very soft. To see the design it was OK, but for nothing else. Now here you can see the steel part: The detail is amazing. This thing is actually looking like a cast part, but here done without any mold!

The design is after the original axle, with both axes aligned different to the hypoid drive of the big one. Inside its "empty" at the moment. Since I do not expect the prototyping process making surfaces where a ball bearing would fit, I will try to get a separate machined part inside with the correct tolerances. Well, thats the idea in the end, no idea if this will be fruitful...

But the outcome of the housing is amazing, so see for yourself! I like it a lot.....

The position of the tranny is somewhat sorted out. The provisional bracket did not allow the tranny to get in the final position, but you can see in the pictures where I am heading: Its offset to the right, so the cardan coming from the motor will be as straight and in the middle as possible.

The motor and the planetary gear were ordered, hopefully coming next week...

Actually yes. But it looks quite diffeent to this one: Since the G463 is a comfortable vehicle, the owners were not supposed to take a quarter of an hour to get the soft top down. And to make this hydraulically the b-pillars were much wider, to get an angle to have the soft top pressed against it. Don't know how to describe it, but you may have the idea.....

In the meantime I made some plastic brackets to bolt the motor-gearbox combo to the frame:

And since this is getting heavy now, I wondered how my springs will work, so I added an accu on the rear end, where the tank is sitting normally, and checked the flex:

The springs seem to be quite all right. With the body put on they were working as supposed: Its a "full-droop" setup on the rear, and a "soft-sprung" on the front, meaning I can get some more weight on there. But to be scale the flex will have to be reduced somewhat, the rear end looks a bit cartoonish with the wheel being pulled out that much:

The Peli Case arrived today. Looks like the design. What a surprise. But is as small as in the CAD picture. No surprise as well I guess.

Its a 3 piece design, only the latches were too small to be printed:

I am somewhat in the mood of Peli Cases! I really like the look and technical specs of these things, so I have some in "real" as well. And maybe its just an unusual scale truck, so I need some unusual scale accessories as well ;)

Since the "white" case was such small, I widened the design, and thats what came out of the printer: This time FDM again, just to see how it works and how the proportions were, before having it print in SLS to get the smoother surface and nicer details....

Hinges don't work on both of them, no chance to get a hinge that small printed in working condition, but they were hollow and openable so slowly I am getting where I planned to!

Back to the frame after the little distraction with the Cases.

I needed to change the axle to BTA steering, since the front of the axle is crammed with the steering link and the panhard rod. After I rotated the knuckles there was obviously no way to attach the steering rod to them, so I needed a solution for that:

Next step was the bracket to attach the panhard to the frame. Brass was the way to go, since this piece needs to hold the axle, so stability was a matter. Obviously the design did not allow to make a one piece design which could be fold, so there were 4 pieces to be soldered together. Took a looong time. I assume others were a lot faster. But with the sanding of the part the outcome is quite nice. And I will never show you the inside of it ;)

I still have no idea how to make the steering link to the servo, but now that everything else is in place I am sure to find a solution.
 
Since I plan to build a front axle for my truck I started with a design. As close to the original, well who will wonder! Here is a rough sketch of how it will look alike:

OK, maybe more than a rough sketch, but far from ready...

To get the design of the knuckles done, I need some CVD's since I do not plan to use dogbones in there. From what I saw I would like to use RC4WD D35 XVD's. But I need the dimensions of these parts to know if this will work. Actually I would buy them, would it not need some time to get them shipped over here. And I do not plan to buy several sets until I find the right and fitting one. Now does anybody here have a set (or a piece) of these XVD's to get me the dimensions?

Since I am not lazy (and curious about the fit anyway) I remodelled the part from the pictures on the site. Here is what I came up with, so you can see what measures I need:

Would be great if anybody could get me these dims, or maybe some CVD with similar dims as well. BUT: The 15mm were a max, and the thread end must be cut anyway....

OK, nobody seems to have any of these XVD's, and even RC4WD did not bother to answer as of yet. So I got myself some Losi CVD's and could go on with the axle project. The Losi parts were only second best for my needs, but what the heck, they were easily available over here.

The dsign is done, cost me some hours on the CAD so far, but it looks like it could work. The prototype parts were ordered today, and I have all the necessary parts like the already mentioned CVD's bearings and so on at home. So as soon as the parts were here I can try and assemble the axle. This is how its gonna look alike:

Well, tomorrow th2 package from Shapeways is supposed to show up. So there is something to build and show next evening. For now I was working on the design of my steering setup. Since there was no way to position the servo in a way to have the horn actuate in a way that the steering link will be as parallel to the panhard rod as possible. When I checked the real one again, I found the steering gearbox on the outer left side of the frame, having its lever right on the height of the bolt of the panhard, so there was something like that what I needed. And this is what my design brought up:

This will give me the chance to position the servo anywhere along the left frame rail.

Thats it for now, tomorrow I will be back with the axle parts pictures. Man, am I suspended to get these.....

OK, the axle parts arrived today. Of course I needed to assemble the parts right away, and everythnig fitted as I hoped it will. The axle tubes were not yet glued into the gearbox, but the gears and CAD's were already in place.

Wow is correct, but check this!

Not much time now, but I needed to get the axle into the chassis, after I glued the parts together. The steering rod is M2, with a brass tube slit over an threaded rod. Now that this is looking quite scale, and seems strong enough to work, I need an M2 Panhard as well. This thing looks quite out of place here.

But beside that everything fits like a glove:

Its neither ;-)

But close, its a kind of polyamid, made as SLS parts. SLS is a lasersinter procedure, mostly used for prototypes, and thats what it is. I úsed it for checking if everything works as it was designed. And working it does. But it would not withstand some abusing while crawling.
