SCX10 Newbie

To be honest with you i wouldnt argue that decision to go rtr at all...im a seasoned rc vet and still prefer to get rtr versions...its much quicker to get started and its easier to learn with in my opinion especially for someone new....the stock servo wont last you very long...it wears out pretty fast as it just uses plastic bushings..i would do the links and servo and be done with it....get yourself a 16t motor pinion for the stock motor and have fun with it..repair or upgrade as needed from there....dont drive it like a mad man and youll be surprised at just how much you dont need to upgrade or repair.

Exactly what im thinking man. Im a feather foot crawler as it is with my rigs. The metal links, steering linkage and upgraded servo are a must as you suggested. I really just dont have the extra time or money to buy a kit along with all the necessary components. I order a 4" lift kit for my Jeep Grand Cherokee and Aussie locker I need to slap in my Dana 44, aling with getting my driveshafts and transfercase linkage all situated. I dont want to get too consumed with another hobby while im working on my DD/Dad Waggon.

What he said. My rig was pieced together but it is essentially a stock scx 10 with aluminum links and crappy electronics. Even my steering link is still plastic, as I break stuff I upgrade.

Did you buy the Axial link kit or did you make your own? I couldn't believe how much their aluminum link kit is for the SCX10. Un-freaking-believable. The stock electronics seem to do pretty well on these little rigs from what I hear, minus the exception of the servo. Will the stock ESC handle a 2S LiPo?
 
2s will be just fine on the Ae-2, some run 3s with bec!

I keep hearing about these "BEC's". What exactly are they, what function do they serve and how much are they?
Pros/Cons? Somebody was telling me to get one if i plan on even getting an upgraded servo?Not a must, but surely a suggestion.

I literally pieced it together. The links are off a ax10, a wraith and a xr10. It is easy enough to build your own links using 8\32 all thread an tubing of your choice 1\4 x.035 works good and revo rod ends. My latest links are just that.

B. E. C. = Battery Elimination Circuit. It bypasses the esc's Bec, and powers either the receiver or the only the servo depending on the wiring. It is advantageous when you are running a high powered servo, but not really necessary on 2s with a stockish servo.

A bec is about 20 bucks plus tax or shipping in some cases...you dont have to have a bec per say...a 2s is fine with the axial esc for what it sounds like youll do with it...the d772 servo is way stronger than a stock servo even at the lower volts the stock esc puts out...i use a 177 oz servo at less than the 6 volts it gets its max rating from with no problems at all...i might be getting high 150ish torque from it...your d772 would be even stronger...i wouldnt sweat it really....you really need a bec though if you plan to run a 3s battery....keep in mind of you plan on larger 2.2 wheels and tires then get the bec...The larger tires put alot more stress on the servo and having the extra power on tap is not a bad idea....you cant beat the d772 servo for the money...i had quite a few hitec servos left from my racing days so i never got one but they get good reviews and the price is right.

2s with d772 servo...no bec needed unless you want the max power the servo puts out at 6v or higher.

3s power or large 2.2 wheels/tires..adding a winch etc.......bec is recommended....you will burn up your esc with a 3s without one.
