What do you smokers pay for a carton of cigarettes today?

A group of us were recently talking about how prices of things have changed over the years. I remember when I was first in the US Navy in the late 70s, we could buy Sea Store cigarettes anytime we were out past the international limit at $1 a carton, can you believe that?

When I quit smoking 8 years ago, I think we were paying about $25 to $30 a carton. I think the last single pack I bought in the Chicago Loop, I paid just short of $10.

When I did smoke I payed around $2/pk when I started ('01) and close to $5/pk towards the end.

After I quit I was briefly employed at a tobacco shop and the name brands were going for 50-70$ a carton. And yes we did have people from NY and NJ coming in buying up specific brands. According to them the same $50/carton brands here went for 100+ up there.

I smoke a pipe or cigars, the wife pays up in Northern BC Canada about $80 to $110 bucks a carton depending on the brand, we spend the winter in AZ and you can get them at the Indian smoke shop for $20 to $25 bucks a carton.

Stupidity ain't cheap! :flipoff:

Disclaimer: I sucked down at least a pack of camel wides every damned day for nearly a decade so get your panties un wadded.

When the price went over $5 a pack that was just the straw that broke the camels back. I don't miss the stink, the lack of taste or the hacking up lung butter but even now just short of 9 years later I still get the occasional craving.

All depends on where u live and what u smoke I smoke camels at $45 a carton and new York is over $100 a carton from what I've heard and Washington is at least $1 more per pack than oregon but I'm only 30 and smokes have almost doubled per pack since I started and gas has tripled since I started driving minimum wage goes up and everything else does but its always nice to pay $300 a month for me and the wife to kill ourselves slowly lol

WOW, drastic difference. I heard Canada was outrageous. I do also smoke cigars, primarily - Java Maduro "wafe" is my favorite though the Java Maduro Robusto and nice too. Not expensive ($5 to $7 each). And just have to have either a Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, Maker's Mark Bourbon flavored coffee or just a nice tumbler of a small lot Kentucky bourbon or maybe a nice Maker's 46'.

i used to rail 3 packs a day. 4 if i went out drinking. pack before noon, pack before dark, pack before bed... for real.

i quit a couple years ago when they were about 7 bucks a pack here in the city of chicago, now they (marlboros) are close to, if not more than 10.

the day i quit i adjusted my auto deposits to just take that money and put it into a savings account.

im still addicted to the damn nicotine lozenges... but its way better imo than stanky cigs.

$5 a carton for Marlboros when I started, now I pay $42 for Pall Malls. Smoke about a half pack a day.

aside from making my own i also use a vapor cig at work cuz our new ceo has banned all smoking on the propriety but yet he is the only person that doesn't smoke or use any kind of tobacco product

When I started about 30 years ago they were $2.00 per pack of 25.
When I quit 4 years ago they were a little over $11.00 per pack of 25.
Now I think they are about $15.00-$20.00 per pack of 25, depending where you buy them.
Cheaper at the supermarket, more expensive at service station or bottle shop.

...our new ceo has banned all smoking on the propriety ...

It's been against the law to smoke in the workplace here for years.

It is against the law to smoke indoors in most states here. I think its silly to ban smoking in bars since you don't generally find the most health concerned patrons there in the first place.

Smoking in "club" bars like the VFW or the eagles which you have to be a member of is not affected since it isn't public.

i cant imagine how non smokers dealt with smoke over all the years.

i now find the smell repulsive and caustic. but when i was a smoker i was completely ignorant to how ****ing nasty it is, and i thought the non smokers were asshole pussies.

its been the same way over here in new jersey but companys had the option to let their employees smoke indoors or not. the only indoor spot we had was in the weld shop. the ceo got rid of the smoking indoors cuz he didnt want us to get "sick" but the welding fumes are a hell of a lot worse than cigarette smoke. we think he got rid of smoking cuz out of 60 employees at our plant he was the only non tobacco user. we all said if anything get rid of "dip" or install spittoons cuz all the guys that dip spit it on the floor none of us wana kneel in that crap

nj is like that to. the only clubs and bars that you can smoke in are cigar clubs or clubs and bars that sell cigs (not in vending machines)

When I smoked in High School in 1977 I swore I would quit if cigs reached one dollar a pack. They were 50 cents a pack then. A carton was under 5.00. I had to quit about 10 years ago because I was diagnosed with COPD. I was waking up at night smothering and breathless. I couldn't work through the day like I did before. Each cigarette cut me like a knife. I used the patch for a week, then cut them in half for a week, then nothing. I take two medications now so I can sleep and breathe. They cost 500.00 a month, 250.00 each. Every month. I tried going without one of them for a month. It was agony. Smothering at night, breathlessness all day, chest pain. I now spend more every month than I ever did smoking and I can't stop.

I'm 54 years old and men older than me have much more stamina. I can't run for fear of pushing myself past a point I can't return from. I have to judge outings for distance to make sure I don't get to winded. I keep an eye out for places to rest. I was always bombarded with the fear of cancer. But, that isn't what most folks get from smoking. COPD, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, is the real threat most people face. It is life stopping and I would not wish it on my worst enemy.

I know none of you want to hear it, but I would highly suggest quitting...yesterday. I don't care how tough you are, or how healthy you think you are, you can't do anything if you can't breathe. Nothing.

K, lecture is over. :)

I was always cautious as to where I blew the smoke so it wasn't into anyones face etc and when I could I'd walk down wind. The smell doesn't bother me at all anymore and I can hang out with people sucking off the marlboro man and joe camel and it doesn't bother me. I'm a truck driver so 98% of my coworkers smoke. They hate to have to use my truck because they will catch the wrath of hell if I smell smoke in it so they have to go without.

In 75 and 76, I was in school in the Navy and we carried small ashtrays with us so we could smoke in class. Then on my first ship in 77, there were 6 of us, all smokers, that worked in a room called Gun Plot that had the mainframe (analog of course), signal processing and radar operator consoles. It was about 8 X 16 and it would look like a fire was burning from the dense smoke. Plus all the electronics were tube technology so it was damn near 100 degrees in there.

And we thank you for coming to that realization..."thumbsup"
