Steering Servos

Ever since I got my crawler up and running I have not been very happy with the steering servos. They are very week and will hardly turn the tires. Just to let you know I'm running 4WS with Futaba FP-S148 servos and am using a RX pack w/ 4 AA's. I'm looking for tips on how to make them turn better or suggestions on good inexpensive servos. I did find some Traxxas 2055 servos that I can pick up a pair for about $20 and claim they are high torque. Are they any good?

For cheap, the Tower Pro servos seem to be the way to go. Not sure of the model number.. 995 or something like that. Search around for Tower Pro, that should get you in the right direction.

Tower Pro MG995.
I found a few Futaba servos (metal geared high torque) but they are digital and only work with FM radios. The Tower pro sounds like a good servo but would it work with my TQ3?

My guess is that they come with different plugs to fit different receivers, or get the right plug at the LHS or just mod the plug to fit.

At $39 a single HiTec 645mg is worth the money - and the traxxas deal isn't that great - unless u want to build something other than a comp crawler that needs servos...they are decent, but they don't hold because they are only rated at 80 oz....the 645's are 130 -

But if youre building a basher - get them.!!! Heck....they'd pretty good at building a winch for a trail rig

XTM Racing

Does anyone know anything about XTM Racing servos. I found one real cheap and cannot find any info on it.

XTM Racing
X-105 MG Metal
Crusher SX Uni-Plug
Item No. 145755

I ran an XTM X-175 and found that the case is a serious weak point on it - after two short runs one of the cups for a gear shaft in the top of the case busted out and now it doesn't turn left. Found that buying a replacement case and having it shipped to Canada is more than a Tower Pro (which is currently on it's way to my house).

most digital servos will work with an AM radio. BUT without the option of end point adjustment it is easy to burn them up. Theres a thread going around about some cheap http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43610&highlight=12kg
if your looking for good cheap servos that might be a good option. personally i run a JR 9000t digital with my tlt. 330oz baby:flipoff:

I just ordered one of these servos so I'll let you know how it goes. They are cheep and thats what I'm looking for because I've already spent more than should have but I can't seem to stop!

What do you mean by "end point adjustment"?

Welcome to the addiction... Endpoint Adjustment (EPA) is just a setting on many radios that allows you to limit the throw of the servo. Say your servo can swing 180 degrees. Using the EPAs on the radio, you can limit the throw to whatever you want; say 90 degrees.

you will want EPA to stop the servo from binding against the wheelstops, which causes the servo to get hot and meltdown.

nope you'll have to mod the radio to do it. I know theres a thread on here somewhere but i cant seem to find it. lol you may want to try searching for it too. LOL its a sticky at the top of the electronics forum

I have been running a JR something-or-other I paid $20 retail for. 120-odd oz, metal gears and bearings. Not too fast, but strong enough for 90% of what I am doing. I'd like to upgrade to a robot, though...

for the cost of a robot servo you could buy a jr9000t , Ive heard of alot of people burning up robot servos, and the 9000 has as much or more power.

that's 12kg/cm...you need to convert that to oz/in

1 kg is equal to 35.273 oz

1cm is equal to .398 in

423 * .398 is 168oz/in

If you're looking for a good servo, I'm a fan of the 94359Z from Airtronics.

X 6,I was hesitant at first, after buying 1 for the front of my Twin crawler and seeing how it works with Moab XL's.....I've got 2 of the 359's on each of the 3 Twin crawlers out in the shop. Only servo I'll ever run, period

Kicka$$ servo's in my opinion.
