stripping metal steering servo gear

I have stripped my metal "center" steering servo gear twice. It's a hitec 645mg.

I don't have any humming and when i turn full turn L to R it doesn't hit anything, so no bind there.

Any clues?

You might just be at the limits of what the 645 can withstand.

I would recommend going up to a Titanium geared Hitec servo like a 7950 or 7955, or even something like a JR8711.

Also check all your steering links and pivot points and adjust as needed if it's binding or feeling a little sticky. I went though my new LCC and made it as smooth as class. It takes no effort to steer the front end with the steering servo connecting rod . I can even remove the servo ball link and shake the front end a little and the wheels will go full left and right with ease. The smoother it is the less effort the servo has apply to steer the front end. And yes go with a Titanium Gear set. Good luck I hope you get this solved .

Have you clocked your axle at all? Hyper clocking will mess with your servo.

taking a tumble and landing in a front wheel will cause a ton of shock load to the servo, bind may not be the issue, take any falls latley?

I smoked through a couple 645's on my Wheely King, it would't surprise me if that's your problem. I have been running the 7955 with no problems at all !!

I have the losi aluminum hubs and carriers with the adjusted caster. It's silky smooth. With the linkage off the servo it will easily flop side to side.

Yea, i've had a couple of good falls lately. I could really see how that could shock load the gears.

It's the servo that came with the rig when i bought it, so i just have been running it and enjoying it mostly. I replaced the gear, again, and if it goes one more time i may have to upgrade.

The Hitec HS645MG Servo is not strong enough for the LCC in my opinion, I had the same for my first and stripped the gear in a couple of days from new, now I'm running the HS7955TG at 6V and love It. My MRC runs a 645MG and seems to be happy on the smaller lighter rig but I think the LCC is just a little heavy for it?

I ran the HS645MG in mine at first and it stipped right away too, so I bought a DS8711 and have had no trouble since.

hey guys, guess what...... just stripped another gear in the steering servo!! Yep, that makes 3 and i'm done with it!

I have seen some options here and would appreciate a few more confirmations on steering servos before i buy a new one. I am not trying to buy the most expensive servo but i am prepared to buy one that works great and not think about it again for a long time.

So should i get the 7950, 7955, DS8711?

Also, what's the best place to buy from?

I have personally like Hitec's. I have been running them for 15+ years. Very little breakage. I've been running 5955's on my crawlers and love em. The 5955's are now the 7955's as the digital part is Version 2 now. Chances are that
645mg is under powered. That's what I ran 15 years ago and still have em on my GT and RC10T3. The 3 Del Monte listed are all great choices and yes they are pricey but well worth it if your into r/c"thumbsup" Chances are you won't run into issues with the listed servos as they are all tested to put out 300 or so oz's of torque, if I remember right that is about 3 times the 645's strength.

I've also only ran Hitec's. Been running a 7955 in my LNC for almost a year now, still going strong and not a single issue. Got a 7950 in my XR10 and it's been great as well. Plan to upgrade my 7955 to a 7950 soon, just need to save up. If you plan to comp, go with the 7950. If you just like to have fun, the 7955 with do everything you'd ever ask for.

Don't forget, you'll need a Castle BEC. Be sure to have it programmed to the correct voltage for the servo you choose.

So i need another BEC to run the servo? I know i had to run an external BEC to run the 3s lipo, so now i need another?

What's the difference between the 7955 and the 7950? Just torque amount or better gears? I just want something that's going to last a long time and i'm not really easy on my crawler that's for sure.

No, if you have an external BEC already then you're good to go.

7955 is 333oz @ 6v. The 7950 is 485oz @ 7.4v.

I agree, get the strongest servo that you can. The 7955 has been great to me but I want more power.

Spent some $$ yesterday at my LHS and pulled the trigger on the Hitech 7950HT! What a beast! It was expensive but i figure it's the last one i'll ever buy... i hope!
