Long time lurker, first time poster, new to crawling, and RCs of this level really, but damn do I love this thing! Been slacking on starting a build thread, but finally getting around to it. I am already hooked on crawling and I've only had my TH for a week. I've been looking into 1/10 scale RC trucks for a while when I found the TH then I waited a little while to collect some extra funds and finally bit the $380 bullet

The day after I ordered the truck I called a local sign shop and asked about styrene. The dude said they had a bunch of scrap and to come on in. I was expecting small little inch or two wide strips, I got way more than that tho…

Mwahahahaha  SO MANY BODY PANELS

remember these pieces especially

and here's a bonus pic from my visit to the art store

experimental roof design made for housing a light bar eventually possibly maybe

Look who came in the mail (a week ago)

The only picture I have of it with the original panels haha

After adjusting the servo end points I went to the backyard to drive my new RC around. After maybe 5 minutes I lost front wheel drive  I checked it out though and found it was the front drive shaft that was not tightened on the ball cap(?) So I cranked down on the allen wrenches and went back outside just to have it happen again 5 minutes later. Called Horizon and learned there's two flat spots that I have to locate and tighten down onto. So I took apart the front end…

Found the flat spots but it still loosens up, I guess I'll loctite them sometime unless someone has a better solution.

I got the rear sway bar kit to try to keep that thing in check at high speeds, seems to work, I put the medium in, might switch it out for the soft though cause a little madness is always fun

Painting started last Thursday, which meant body disassembly stating with the wheels

and the body, I put toothpicks in the screw holes to keep the paint off the threads, I also fitted the window screens which I painted black but it didn't stick to the plastic :x

ORANGE THINGS!!!

and the rims

I used a drill press for the panels just to guarantee I drilled straight downwards

I have the body panels cut and bent, it had vinyl on the styrene, still bent after a little boiling just fine, I also started using an iron with parchment paper between it and the plastic. Wheels are also back together…

...but there's something I want to start on first, a fully custom hardbody. I have had a good bit of experience building models, from Warhammer stuff back in middle school, sculpture and pottery in high school, and industrial design in college, I had some confidence which is being tested along with patience at this point (remember this is four or five days ago)

build tip..use heavier paper than regular printer paper and poke toothpicks into screw holes to both hold the paper and mark screw holes (I'm actually waiting to mark the holes tip the body is a single piece and nearly done since I tweak the panels quite often)

side panel with half the tail gate ready to be on styrene

the hood is coming along, gotta sand it down and make a grill, lights, any other little details. The bumper fits just over the front plate/cage hinge

taped and read for Plastruct, I planned on doing the roof and side panels together first then attaching it to the hood

comin along nicely

there's E6000 on the underside so I wrapped the cage in plastic and taped the body on to hold the correct shape

I went to my family cabin this past weekend and of course I brought my TH with me, the hard body is on hold while I go trail riding and crawling around the mountains PS- I bought a 4000mah 2S Lipo and boy am I happy I did, such a long runtime when staying in low gear

So without any further ado…here she is

and some of her in a TH's natural habitat

I ended up making a hill climb/trail utilizing some log steps and the curved hill next to it with rocks and some hefty roots, can't wait to go back and extend the trail, I have grand plans for this

time to go home, can't believe how much fun this thing is! I need to make a course in the alleyway behind my house in Atlanta. I cleaned her right after this BTW.

I also have a question for all the TH owners as well as anyone else really who owns an RC..

When I plug a new battery in and first turn on the truck, I don't get any drive at all, just a little twitch. the steering works just and the ESC is lit green, could the motor just be dirty?

Oh and what tires do you guys recommend for the TH? Tires for crawling not speed. Or do you guys think it is just as good to cut every other tread around the edges and cut the foams? It's time and work vs. money it sounds like, I just wanted y'all's two cents

ha^ yeah I am, its always on before the truck is

does anyone know about terra claw 35 turn motors? The speed of the 15 is fun, but speed seems to break shit :\

I have found I don't like the stock tires for anything but bashing in high gear. I tried cutting the foams ans still was not pleased. I have not cut the tires yet. That is an idea. I run 1.9 ripsaws on mine when I'm crawling around. And I even prefer them when doing bashing. I just don't want to wear them out.
I really like the build. Your painted cage looks terrific.

thanks guys

the cage was primed with rustoleum primer and painted with liquidtex spray paint, michaels had a 50% coupon, that stuff is like a shell of paint, obviously take your time and do many light layers, but worth the time, and they have a bunch of colors

i'll look into the ripsaws, I can tell the stock tires are holding me back a lot, they're fun but limiting

i'll probably include my backyard course build in this thread too btw, I've been cruising the home course threads and have gotten so man ideas, this forum is great

I was able to get some work done this afternoon before it got dark on the course out back

There were sooooo many leaves in the alley, I'm guessing easily a solid 6 inches deep.

Once I got through them though I was greeted with beautiful rich black soil. Not sure why my phone was taking such shit pictures today, maybe HDR was turned on

I used a bunch of old bricks to start forming hills…I'm gonna need a lot more rocks and whatnot

It got too dark to take pics but I'll update y'all tomorrow with what got done.

I came in and used my new driver to take off the body panels so I can get back to work on my hardbody

Went to dinner tonight and had some very tasty beers (Lagunitas Sucks, Green Flash Palette Wrecker, and Brash Skankin Dirty if anyone is a craft brew kinda person around here) and now I don't want to take any chance of making a stupid mistake so hardbody work will be put off for the night

Got home from work and started the progression of my crawling area, as you can see I have room to expand up top if I clear out the ivy

I started to adding a log zone, I'm thinking about extending it, what are your opinions on log crawling? I'm getting more rocks very soon and will be scouting for more this weekend, a.k.a. snagging some from the construction site up the alley, I figure they deserve it for waking me up so many Saturday mornings :flipoff:

I got a call form the office and had to hold off crawler course digging for a bit and the sun went down past the trees so no more photos of the work I got done before legit sundown until tomorrow afternoon most likely

but that means hard body modeling time! "thumbsup"

After adding the body seam reinforcements the cage wouldn't fit inside the body without rubbing, so I marked the tight spots and carefully scraped the cutout off and voila, perfect fit

The quarter panels don't line up with the hood for shit, and I didn't feel like dealing with it tonight, so I put it off to work on the hood and replacement inside panel for the stock one with the figure. I originally made it a flat piece but the gear case interfered with the fit. The plan is to attach the extension with the cover as a single piece then cut it out with a dremel most likely to accompany the case

reinforcement

inner panel replacement

A sazerac is great company for styrene work

tight fit, but tight is nice ;-)

Here's how the hard body stands for tonight, the edges of the sides and roof are sanded down but need filler, a lot of edges need some work after shaving things to fit, plus the tailgate and the quarter panels need bending, lots of work left but she's coming along

I've got some itty bitty I-beams I'm going to use for some detail work around windows and as trim down the side panels and probably some on the rear. I've also got to make a grill and add some detail to the hood, any suggestions?

I have tried cutting the foams and cutting lugs out of the stock tires; they are just not very good at anything. I run the small swampers on my TH and there is not anything the stock tires even do half as well as them.

Besides I am an Interco faith full and they just look cooler than the rest.

Do they work with the headlock wheels easy enough?

I am running them on the stock wheels with no problems at all so I don't know about headlock wheels. Or did you mean beadlock

I even broke a wheel one time out and the tire didn't come off I didn't even know it was broke tell I got inside to clean it up.

Your body looks real good but I am curious to how the styrene will hold up. I do drive my stuff hard but the stock polycarbonate body is starting to come apart. Definitely post up how it does with real world beatings.

haha, my bad, yeah…beadlock, thats awesome the rims hold up even partially broken, I'll look into swampers for sure

As far as damage to the body, this will probably not see the same kind of action my pieced body takes, it'll be more of a low gear crawler, but I am still reinforcing all panel connections

update on the body too…I got it all connected tonight!!!!!!!!!!!:mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen:

but first look at that smooooooooth hood, still deciding how to do the grill, suggestions are more than welcome

I'm really digging using an iron for straight bends, just gotta get the feel for it with parchment paper in between, check out the 90* on this back panel

heres the back taped together to make sure it fit the cage

measuring the cuts to make the hood fit to the sides, it still requires some bending tho

Again, I really recommend trying an iron for styrene bends. Quick tip, use a table/cutting board/piece of lumber/metal/whatever is the angle you like edge

All panels are now one

and heres some back bumper work, its gonna bend around the back edges nicely, it's also very strong

It was too nasty out to work on the course, and it sounds like tomorrow will be gross too..and saturday

mwahahahahahaha! the panels have now become a body!!!

but first the bumper is now on and helping to reinforce the back

and heres the body next to the cage

time for a closeup, I still have lots of filling and sanding

and obviously I had to take some pics of her all back together

I think there's going to be enough clearance for some trail running "thumbsup"

and one more money shot for good measure

this thing has taught me a lot, I might be making another one of these, but there is still a ton of work to do on this one before I can call it done
