Over a year later, we work on this beast. Things I've done since then and mostly today.
- Glued tires on
- Caterpillar decals (stock decals scrubbed off or painted over)
- Steering angle maxed
- Cut steering arches more to prevent rubbing
- Painted rear section black like real model
Started to scrub/rub off/paint the stock decals. Dishwashing soap, a battery strap and elbow grease actually worked decently but I ended up using just some 3000 grit.
The original top tie rod link I used had normal rod ends, which would hit the servo horn at full lock. I swapped out the normal rod ends with offset ones, trimmed more off the bracket that holds the knuckles in to get the extra angle. I initially thought it was fine when I first cut it last year, but more plastic needed trimming away as it'd rub and drag the wheels sometimes.
With the body on, here's where it would rub. On the real forklift, this section is much more open which I take care of all of that and most importantly preventing any rubbing. It's like it was meant to be.
Left was before, right is after bottom black piece trimmed.
Left, full angle done. Right, body portion trimmed and yellow section in the rear is now black.
Some final pics reassembled, showing the decals. The rear CAT decal should be 100% in the black section, but with the tow hook there I didn't want to fully cut up the decal so I just cut it in half instead like so. Besides the crappy desk setting, it looks how it should finally! Still needs more though, like:
- Propane tank
- Functional lights
- Yellow hazard light
- Fire extinguisher
