The Interceptor: A U4 super car

COME ON! Do it! :ror: It's so much easier to play with the lines in CAD to make sure it looks good. Are you going to extract tube bending templates from your model?

Happy now? Fusion isn't the easiest for drawing 3d tubing profiles, but I can do enough to get the general lines and a rough idea where everything needs to go.

Holy crap it's been awhile since I've updated this thread and just about as long since I've messed with this design. Between working 100 miles from home, buying a house and trying to plan a wedding it's been hard to find the motivation to get this thing finished.

Then this happened:

I decided that I wanted a super compact low CG transmission that put the motor low and forward. All 32 pitch gears for strength, an offset front output and centered rear output for the scale factor and it should be relatively cheap to print and source the parts for. I finished the design last night and got it uploaded to Shapeways. I should have the first proto parts in a week or two to start checking fitment and durability.

Why haven't you shown off that transmission yet?

This one?

It's done. I should have known better than to get the white plastic, it pulled up every bit of dirt and oil from my hands and work bench. Other than that and a little bit of grinding on the gears it works perfectly.

Shapeways printed it with SLS white nylon.

So this:

...Is driving a redesign. I'm a dumbass and didn't think about how wide the overall trans would be and consequently it doesn't fit very well on my bomber skid. I already ordered gears and started modeling another trans; the next one will have 3 sets of reduction gears instead of just 2 on this design.

Love how your using cad to design many components of this build. I use solidworks everyday at work and can only imagine how much more fun it would be if I was constantly designing crawlers.

Have you ever wondered how much quicker you could prototype parts if you had a 3D printer and a laser cutter or 2d cnc to cut cabin fiber plates?

Every day. I spent some time at del monte's house before KOH this year and being able to draw something up and cut it right there was really nice.

Just FYI your new transmission design is a very similar layout to our scale trans: Scale Transmission Kit for SCX10

Just a suggestion...

I don't really see it.

you don't happen to have that posted up on shapeways do you? I could see that being very useful for some of us.

I would love to see an update on this build. Maybe a picture that works? I hate photobucket. It has destroyed thousands of forums.

I've pretty much given up on posting pics here on RCC. Instagram and Facebook are way easier.

Also, I've found its easier to just print an entire axle housing with the proper axle geometry I want than it is to glue parts onto an aluminum axle.

And what does a proper geometry axle cost to manufacture?

Not much has changed. The overall layout and suspension idea is the same, the axles are the only real change. In the last two years I went from knowing jack shit about 3d printing to having full axle housings and skid plates printed with no issues. Here's a pair of Bomber axles I had printed and this is the wear after the KOH 5k race.
