The RCC Hobby Machinists Challenge

What a prick . Fine then asshole, I bet you didn't have very many friends when you were a kid did you.:flipoff:

I may just have a "Hippy Dippy Craft Fair Challenge" as you put it and we won't let you play even if you have a dremel and hacksaw.:afro:

All I have is a wood lathe. Can I enter the Hippy craft challenge?

Only because you're scared I'd win all the time.

You can enter this one if you can get the material chucked up. We'll be doing round stuff too. "thumbsup"

Im pretty busy at work right now but i might be able to make time. Im in.

referring to your 1.5" block example. would the part have to keep at least one 1.5" dimension or would the 1.5x1.5x1.5 be a maximum size

Here is what will happen...Come Sunday I will say, for example, "make something using a 1.5" square block of material". It can be anything you want, out of anything you want, as long as the exterior dimensions are 1.5x1.5x1.5. I may ask for something made out of a short length of round stock, or something rectangular, or something attached with a single bolt, or something interlocking.

The only specifics you will be asked to maintain are base measurements of the material. Everything else is up to you. It doesn't have to be a functioning item for any specific application unless that is what you want. This competition is all about being creative and I can only assume that fixturing will play a large part in this.

It'll be whatever I say it is.

The dimensions I give may be minimum, maximum, or exact. You can expect most of this to be small stuff to keep material costs down, labor time low, and parts a reasonable size for everyone involved.

is this for hobby guys or can a 30 year master machinist enter also. :)

Jump in! "thumbsup"

edit: I started an entry list in the OP. If you wanted in and you don't see your name, say so. Its not terribly important that you do, but it'd be nice to get a feel for how big of a mess we're going to be making come next week.

The rules are simple...every Sunday a new part dimension will be posted. You will have until the following Friday to complete your creation and submit your entry. On Saturday a poll will be started where any and all can vote for their favorite entry (be prepared to supply a picture or two). On Sunday the winner will be announced and the next weeks instructions given out.

i got a ?. are we making a new part every week? the "every Sunday a new part dimension will be posted" has me a little confused. i'm assuming we are, but at first glance i thought it was like you'd give us a dim every week and at the end see who got the part right. lol. so you will be giving us a stock dim to start with correct?

Yes, a new part every week. You get the dimensions you have to work with on Sunday, submit your entry Friday, it gets voted on Saturday, winner and new part announced Sunday.

Or, we could do it biweekly if that is too fast for everyone. Whatever works best.

There is no getting the "part right". You make what you want within the confines that are assigned. Judging will be done by anyone who stumbles into the thread and feels like casting a vote for the one they like best.

Here's an example, and something I did the other night just goofing off. It doesn't do anything, it isn't for anything, its just a thing. Hell, I didn't even plan it out or take many measurements. So if I say "make something out of a 1.5x1.5x1.5 block", you'll do something like this. Just get creative.

So when you give one dimension, is it always a block or is that just one dimension we have to work with? If you give 1.5", can it be 1.5" X 6" X 12" for example?

that's a lie, it's a "pencil holder paper wieght 1.5" measuring device that doubles as a shock holder"

I'm in this sounds fun.

I'm pretty sure all 3 dimensions, X, Y and Z will be givin' and the finished product needs to be within this dimension when finished.
The 1.5" X 1.5" X 1.5" block (in the example) could end up a pyramid as long as the 3 dimensions are kept.

Maybe. Guess it will depend on the material size you choose, as to whether or not I will participate.
