The RCC Hobby Machinists Challenge

so does it have to still resemble the cube shape? or just start from the original black and just fit inside the original dimensions.

I'm pretty sure all 3 dimensions, X, Y and Z will be givin' and the finished product needs to be within this dimension when finished.
The 1.5" X 1.5" X 1.5" block (in the example) could end up a pyramid as long as the 3 dimensions are kept.

The examples I've given are just examples. I may give one dimension, two dimensions, or all three. It could be a cube, a pyramid, a rectangle, or a cylinder.

Also, a pyramid is not a block, its a pyramid. ;-):ror:

Also also, I'm going to have to learn how to make a pyramid. That looks like it could be a good challenge.

Maybe. Guess it will depend on the material size you choose, as to whether or not I will participate.

Right now I don't plan on anything being much over 1.5" square or 4" long. We will also be doing really small stuff too. Later on, if some of you want to do big stuff, that's fine too.

I want to keep things so that people can use either scrap material that they've got laying around, or something that they can source for very little money. If you want to use a cheap chunk of pine, that is perfectly acceptable.

It depends on that weeks challenge. Every week should be a different from the last.

Sounds like a pretty cool deal, I have no skills so I won't participate on the building side, but I'll for sure be watching and voting.

I think weekly sounds too fast. What about give the assignment on a sunday, it's due the next wednesday, voting opens thursday, closes saturday and the next assignment is given out that sunday.

Here is something I had a machinist from here make me. I received them in the mail lastnight. The original Cast version (80 years old) can be seen on the bottom. The new pieces were turned from 304 stainless.

This sounds interesting.. I feel like I have a vague understanding of it all at this point but, sign me up if there is space and I'll pick it up as it goes. "thumbsup"

this reminds me of a saying that was used in a shop i used to work in.

"Quality, Quantity, Deadline....Pick two, that's all your getting" :ror:

I wish our new shop was up and running... looks like our machines will be delivered sometime around the 2nd week of February. Still not sure when we will have 3 phase power up and running though  We got smacked in the face today with a bunch of bureaucratic BS over who needs to clean up some overgrowth and 2 trees so the power company can set a new pole for our 3 phase.

Once it's up and running, I'm in for the challenge. "thumbsup"

Not a bad idea, it gives people the weekend to do stuff instead of trying to cram it in after work/school/whatever.

Or, start/stop it in the middle of the week. That way you still get your weekend.

I don't expect much of this to be too time consuming. 2-3 hours machine time max for most of us, less for the more capable.

We'll do this first round in a week, see how it goes, and let everyone get the feel for it. The schedule can be adjusted as needed.

I work in a machine shop, unfortunately its not at my disposal. On the other hand I do have access to Solidworks. Can I play?

Entries need to be physical objects. If you want to draw something up within the confines of the assignment, go right ahead. I'm sure we'd be interested in seeing it. "thumbsup"

There is always space. "thumbsup"
