thinking about getting an rc F1

as the tittle says im thinking about getting an rc f1 but unsure of which one to get.

im looking for one that has parts that are fairly easy to get in the U.S. and wont break the bank. it will be only run on asphalt parking lots.

it will get a brushless system and a 2s lipo as well as asphalt tires. i would like it to be pretty fast so it would have to have great rear traction.

so which one would you guys recommend?

I've raced a 1/10 scale F-1 for years. The best handling one is made by Tamiya called an F103. If you can find one (try EBay)...pick it up...you can get the parts to keep it going at Tower Hobbies. Problem is Tamiya quit making it in favor of their new model the F104----don't buy that one...it doesn't handle AT ALL.

There are some new chassis out of Japan...but they take quite a bit of tweaking to get them to run right. If you have the coin, Corrally makes a heck of a car...but it will cost about $400... Just the chassis. They are a Canadian company.

Depending on your local, there are organized races for F-1. They are big in So Cal.

i know corrally is supposed to be very good quality but im not looking to spend $400 on an f1. are the 3 racing f109, 3 racing fgx or the hpi formula 10 any good?

im thinking about getting the exotech chassis for one anyway.

i personally wouldnt bother with the HPI, I like the f103 and the 3racing chassis, as said before the 3racing takes a bit more setup work but so many people race them now that you can easily find a good setup for yourself... also. a box stock f103 (stock gearing and silver can) is a fast car.. they are geared to be fast... brushless would make it ridiculous and i think you'd find yourself spending more time replacing broken parts then actually driving it...

ok ive read that the hpi gets horrible rear traction, but was just curious. im kind of leaning towards the 3 racing f109 or fgx, i just dont know which one to get.

if i did brushless, would a 17.5 or a 21.5 motor be too much?

i would personally run the 21.5 out of those two. but i race 21.5TC so thats a bit closer to what I am used to. you can always put a smaller pinion on it if its to crazy

about how fast would you think an f1 would go with a 21.5?

i have some fast rc's but the ones i have are not as light, and they are all wheel drive. being an sc8e and a hpi sprint 2 (not set up to drift)

the exotec chassis wouldnt be right away. if i liked the way the car handled, then id eventually get the chassis.

i just dont want to put the money out right away, and end up not liking it. just to wind up selling it.

I've seen an Exotec work on only one chassis...and he made every chassis he touched work...It's not a guarantee to make your chassis better. Find an F103 and put a 21.5 brushless in it. You'll be a happy camper

i know you guys are saying to go with the f103 but i am reading that the fgx is the best handling f1 on the market.

how different is the handling between the 2?

i aldo read that the fgx is a little bit slower than a f104

One would have to have owned both to be able to answer that question. I have owned a 103 and a 104, an f109 and an Indy chassis. The FGX came out after I began crawling and sold all my chassis...never got to drive one, but have seen it. The guys liked it that owned them. There is some talk locally that they might ban the FGX because of unfair advantages :shock:....a lot of local racers run the Tamiya challenges...so they follow Tamiya rules...as does So Cali racers. They now run rubber tires because of those rules. Rubber tires are an entirely different animal compared to foam

I'm starting to babble...bottom line is, if they ever open up the class and let racers run whatever chassis/tire they want...like F1 should be...I would buy either the Corrally or the FGX and do it again. Till then, they can bitch and moan, squabble and cheat to their hearts content. I DO NOT like Tamiya's marketing tactics in this class of on-road racing...discontinue the most successful chassis ever made for a much more inferior design, then disallow any other chassis from competing in their races...forcing you to buy the F104...the equivalent of running a Force India chassis in the real F1 world....

Where are you C0bra ??? Do they race them around your area ?
If they do, you might want to chat with some of them....
Good luck...and most of all, have some fun...stay away from curbs as they are F1 murderers...

i live in easton pa, which is right on the pa/nj border. i think they race f1, but ive never raced before.

formula One EP Car, ,(SAKURA-FGX) by 3RACING (KIT-SAKURA-FGX)


but they don't have a solid rear axle so, as I understand it, they don't conform to race rules.

I'm going to get one and mount a usb micro video camera and drive it from the drivers POV from my laptop....can't wait, should be awesome!
