Tires for CC-01 Unimog???

Hi guys.

Looking for some suggestions.

I recently had a bit of a debacle with Tamiya regarding the closeout CC-01 Touareg that I ordered...well, after a long story, they ended up sending me a Unimog instead, which is better because I like it better!!

Anyways, in anticipation of getting it I am going about getting some parts for it. I have already gotten an Axial 55t motor that I will be installing to help limit the speed a bit and some Boca bearings for the entire build. I've also got a decent servo on the way.

Where I'm a bit lost is with tires. I have read that the stock tires are pretty horrible. I'm looking to upgrade to something better so that I can put them on when I do the build.

Problem is, I don't really know what kind of tires I should go with. The truck will be used primarily on mountain bike trails...so pretty hard packed dirt that can be a TAD bit moist, but not anywhere close to wet.

I would like for the tires to look like they should be on a Unimog...so nothing huge, I guess, and I would like to use the stock wheels that come with the kit.

The only tire I've found as a suggestion was the Trail Busters at RC4WD. These ones here:
Trail Buster Scale 1.9 Tires

I found those were the tires used in the RCSoup build article for the Mog. Unfortunately, I haven't found much information about whether the larger size ended up being a problem or not with suspension and chassis clearance. It didn't appear to be in the videos of it running, but I could never find any reference to be definitive.

I'm sorry if there is a thread somewhere that I have totally missed. I've tried searching the forum using the "Search this Forum" button, but when I put in Unimog Tires, it's coming back with every thread that mentions Unimog OR tires, so I'm not having much luck searching.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Jeff

It's a little tricky getting a tire to look truly scale on a CC01 Unimog. I'm using the RC4WD Prowler XS and I find them a little big, but not awful.

The mud pluggers look more scale in terms of width and have kind of a milder tread, but they are a little taller. (over 4")

I think you'd essentially want to go with a tire under 4" in diameter to get a scale look with this body.

I have a mog under construction, and have a set of these on it: 1.9 High Mass Wheel & Tire set for Crawler & SCX-10
I find them to be very good value for your money, and they're really heavy. This I found to be a great plus, as they make the car behave more like a scaler in terms of having to accelerate more mass. Also, you get better tilt and climb angles with a lower center of mass.
To order, I sent an email to topsonic@hkstar.com who gave me a paypal link and sent the stuff.
Once more; Great stuff, good wheels and soft tires!

Those look pretty cool, too, ovstebo.

I think I will contact them to see about cost and shipping.

How are they grip wise?? Pretty decently sticky?

Hey Gimp  haha, I picked up losi 1.9 mini rock crawler tires which don't look very scale at all but they were cheap so I got them. They are super freaking soft though.

Oooh...I like the Mud Thrashers, too. And they seem to be a bit "shorter" tire, which would help with chassis issues a bit more than the taller tires would.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

Jep, I found them quite good! As I have never tried the RC4WD tires, I can't compare to them, but they're easily the softest and stickiest tires I've ever had on a RC model. Also, build quality on the wheels are superb, and the bolts can be replaced by M2s for a more scale look.

When I bought them, I was originally looking at a set of tango downs with some narrow tires on them, but found these recommended on a German forum. Price-wise, I ended up with 6 complete wheels and tires for what 4 RC4WD ones would have been.

To help with suspension issues there is a spacer that hardends the shock springs. Remove that just from the back and put a small spacer and longer screws were the upper shock mount is. That piece will swivel a little but it really helps from beating up you're truck and will help from those tires draggging you're body. The front you can file down the bottom back of the c hubs to get a little more lift in front. Man I want a taurag.fml.

I stumbled across a complete set of the Integy high mass wheels/tires today, so I just had to buy them. They appear well made and the tires seem plenty soft for trailing/light crawling.

The high mass part comes from the thick steel internal beadlock ring. By itself, it probably weighs as much as the rest of the assembly.

It was $60 for all 4. Not bad for a complete set of wheels and tires.

Okey dokey. Ask and ye shall receive. I assembled and stuck them on the Mog just now. Pretty easy to put together, even with halfway paralyzed hands. One thing to note is they do weigh a lot, especially when compared to plastic wheels and tires with no foams (195g vs 63g) That's about 4.5 ounces at each corner! I think I'll have to jack up the rear of the chassis some for clearance. They're a bit taller.
