Toyota Tundra recall

I might hold off on that it might trap what ever moisture is in there and make it rust even faster. I have heard that was a problem with the old zeibart stuff. People would get the doors done and next season they would rust out horribly.

Its not an undercoating. From what I'm told its more of an anti corrosion spray like WD-40.(Moisture dispersant) There sending me a free can so I'll try it out.

My 1974 F-100 has the Ziebart coating when it was new. They drilled holes and shot the undercoating in every place imaginable and coated the truck. Truck is 35 years old has the original paint and not a spot of rust on it. Truck wasn't a beater though and was cared for. I havn't heard such great stuff out the ziebart coatings in later years though.

I can't imagine how any of you guys that live in the salty areas handle it.

Pressure wash the underside and get underneath in the sometime with paint and rust converter. Vehicles rust out quick when you allow dirt, salt and crap to collect in areas and attract moisture. Thats whats so bad about parts of canada, lots of dirt/gravel roads. So you not only have the salt and calcium getting in every cranny, you got the dirt and rocks too.

I live in Upper Michigan where the roads get very bad. You see alot of cars get rusted because of the road salt, mainly because they do not wash them in the winter months. My 2001 Dodge Ram has been in my family from the time it was new, and it doesn't have any rust on the body, and only small ammounts of rust on the undercarrage. That is because i wash the SOB once a week, so the salt doesn't build up on it. It does get to be a Pita in the dead of winter, but that is what Torpedo Heaters are for.

following 20 Severe Cold Climate States and the District of Columbia are affected.

CT, DE, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, VA, VT, WI & WV
i find it funny that they didnt include utah...in the winter our roads go from black to white cause of the salt, makes black cars white....utah uses tons of salt on the roads:shock:

If some would not jump to conclusions about the problem... The REAL problem is incorrect application of floor mats. If people would pay attention and install them correct, no problems would come up. It's due to the idiots that caused problems... yes, I feel bad for the families that were effected by the deaths, but was not the fault of Toyota.

Do NOT stack floor mats. Do NOT use non-Toyota mats.

Always keep an eye on the floor mat clips, make sure they are always intact. If they are missing, go to local Toyota dealer and get some for FREE. Toyota has made it clear that every dealer is to give the customer FREE floor mat clips if needed.

There was a statement that I printed off today at work that I meant to bring home and scan/post in this thread but forgot.... Talks about reshaping of gas peddle on some Toyota vehicles.

It's not a "recall" per say, it's classified as a campaign. A campaign to fix the possible issue at hand. Toyota is probably the best at taking care of a possible issue. Example, what other company would fix, for FREE, part of the steering system of a 20 year old truck? Toyota does. The 50N Campaign is for the relay rod. In some circumstances they have been seen to break(I've only seen the T-100's break) so Toyota took steps to fix them. The 4wd 1989-1995 Trucks/4Runners and T-100's all covered.

That gas pedal is clearly a design screwup on Toyotas part. Common sense would tell you not to shape the pedal like that (a ramp) because it can get under floor mats and etc.(Especially when its so close to the floor) The gas pedal should be flat. Using nothing but Toyota floor mats is extremely unrealistic. You know dam well when you design vehicles non OE mats are going to be put in. I never had OE floormats on any of my stuff because they suck and don't keep the carpet clean.

I think the All Weather Mats from Toyota are killer. Nice and heavy. Have deep ribs in them to trap mud/water. By far some of the best.... IMO.

I picked my truck up from the dealer today, they replaced the spare tire holder assembly and thats all.I guess the Toyota reps determined the rust wasn't bad enough to warrant a frame replacement.I think I will powerwash the frame and treat it with some sort of rust inhibitor just to keep it from getting any worse.

I'm getting a free sample of this to try.

Some guys coat the underside of their truck with it before winter to help keep the corrosion at bay. I'm going to spray the stuff up the drain holes in the door of my truck so the bottom of the doors don't rust. I'll see how it works.

We used that stuff a lot on the helos when I was in the Coast Guard.Flying in a salty environment would corrode the hell out of anything aluminium.the stuff works pretty good.Just don't go overboard with the stuff. Its also a PITA when you have to work on something thats coated with the stuff.

A while ago I purchased a undercoating gun setup from Eastwood, just dug it out from underneath the workbench.I think I am going to try some of Eastwoods HD rust inhibitor, they make it in a satin black now, perfect for frames and suspension peices. The container screws right on to the gun so it should make things a little easier.

My understanding of the issue is that Toyota will not be replacing frames for this. So far only if necessary, they will replace the rear cross member that holds the spare tire carrier, if needed. Only one that I have heard of doing an actual frame replacement is on the older Tacoma trucks and the issue of rust inside the frame rails, which do pose a danger to the occupants. The spare tire holder is not as bad of an issue as the Tacoma frames breaking in half.

Dragging this subject up again.About 3 weeks ago I was powerwashing the front framerails on my 01 Tundra in preperation for some rust inhibitor.Imagine my horror when I blew a 2 inch hole thru the front framerail with the powerwasher!I stared in disbelief for a while trying to figure out what I was gonna do,finally called my dealer,James Toyota in Flemington,NJ.They said bring it in right away. The service manager looked at it and ordered me a new frame on the spot.I just picked up my truck last night and all I can say is WOW!Not only did they replace the frame they also replaced the lower control arms, all susp bushings, all brake lines, fuel lines, gas tank straps, swaybar end links, etc, etc. The list of parts covered 2 full pages! My truck is almost 11 years old and it is brand new again.I have kept the body and interior immaculate.Driving it is amazing, like the day I bought it.My cost was $430 for some extras, fuel filter, front diff seals and upper and lower radiator hoses, thats it.The dealership literally went thru every part on the truck while it was apart to check for wear and leaks, freaking amazing job and they did it in 1 week!Toyotas for life for this guy.

I ended up doing 3 Tundras before I left...they suck compared to the Tacomas :x for one, they dropped the hours on the job from 60 to 40 and they give you half the replacement parts. Be glad you got control arms, I dont know if they are now but originally they were NOT part of the replacement parts list like the Tacomas.

Glad your truck is back together and that you are happy "thumbsup" My old boss asked me to come back and swap frames because the kid doing them now doesnt give a crap and they are all coming back with issues.

They do frame swaps at the Toyota dealer here, saw a stack of them sitting outside a couple weeks ago. I would never buy a mid-90's and up Toyota, or even take one for free. I don't know why Toyota decided to go with stamped baking sheets for frame rails.

It has nothing to do with Toyota actually...Dana ****ed up and never correctly treated the frames for rust corrossion.

I had a picture (can't find it) showing that it came from Dana...o well
