I got a Dell XPS 8500 desktop that is a 3.4 gig I7 with 8gb of ram and a Nvidia 620 graphics card and 460 watt power supply

upgrading to

16G's of 2 X 8G's of PNY XLR8 DDR3 12800 Memory

Antec High Current 900 Watt Power Supply

MSI Nvidia Geforce GTX 970 Gaming 4 G's of DDR5

Golden Edition

and if I can use the 8 G"s of 2 x 4 G's to make it 24 G's on the mother board thing is going to rip

That would make a hell of a CAD machine! It is pretty similar in specs to what we provide to the engineers at my job. We go with the Quadro K6000's for any new ones, and the last generation has Quadro K5200's to be "certified" for Pro-E.

While the GTX cards will absolutely get the job done at a fraction of the price, when you are designing and manufacturing parts for commercial airliners the FAA says everything needs to be "certified". The military parts we make are held to an even higher standard.

Workstation cards and desktop cards also do not render the same way. They may run the same GPU core, but the way they function are completely different. Issues come in with large complex assemblies and FEA type work.

Also why FireGL and Quadro cards will not play games worth a !@#$
 
I bought Far Cry 4 before Christmas, and the game is bad ass, and my current setup is not cutting it, So I bought the GTX 970, and you need 550 watt to 600 watt power supply, so I upgraded the power supply and upgraded the memory to make it faster, this is my Gamer setup, I love the Need for Speed series, and first person shooters, and going online and opening a can of whoop ass on the shit talkers, there is some on every game site and I shut them up for a little while.
 
If you're only gaming, no huge video editing projects / CAD... 16 GB of memory is overkill. I game everyday, with 6gb of memory. I've had 16gb in my computer, played the same games with no noticeable differences.
16gb is a good place to be tho. But you're a Ferrari in traffic. Not taking it out of 1st gear :)

Not trying to rain on your new purchase parade, I love building new PC's and having a ton of new parts in front of me!

I had a old Pentium 4, 2.5 GIG with as much memory, as I could shove into the motherboard and the biggest and the last of the none PCI Express, Nvidia cards, running XP PRO 2, and I had to use Bob Card to write my own programs for the CNC Lathe and CNC Mills classes I was taking and it worked fine for me, I used it up to late 2012 when I bought the Dell XPS 8500, and I have never had a problem, except I had to format and reload windows 8 pro now upgraded to 8.1, I thought I would upgrade it, cause the Dell XPS 8700 is over $1000 and its a 3.6 Gig so upgrading is cheaper than replacing it.
 
look what the mailman brought me today, I got my Antec 900 Watt power supply and my 16 Gigs of PNY XLR8 memory, now I need some of that compressed air in the cans to clean out all of the dust before upgrade my Desktop, I think my local Walmart or Best buy sells the duster cans of compressed air.

Nice specs for upgrades. I went from an 8 gb laptop to a new m6800 with ssd and 32 gb ram and it's insane. 4 gb vram is also anice bonus

Hope your upgrades help out
 
The 900 watt power supply lasted the weekend, it was installed on a Friday, I played Far4 Friday night and Saturday

Monday morning went to start the desktop, its dead nothing, no power output at all, the fan in the power supply is not spinning

And the orange light on the Mother board that indicates there is power is not on means dead power supply

cost my $90 to have the processor and every thing re-connected, because when the power supply went south, it caused the processor have to be removed and re-inserted and every thing unplugged and re-plugged in, I put the 460 watt power supply back in and the NVidia 630 graphics card back in.

The NVidia 970 card I bought needs 500 watts minimum, to play it safe, I do it this way 500 watts X 15% = 750 watts, for this build I'm going 500 watts X 17% = 850 watts is needed for a little extra kick, the 900 was nice, but it hit the top of the inside of case right were the USB/phone jack is located

And this time, its going to be a Modular 850 watt power supply to eliminate the FXXXXXX, cluster of unneeded power cables, All I need is, One Serial ATA for the hard drive, One Serial ATA for DVD/CD drive, One Four Pin Connector for the CPU Fan, the Motherboard 24 pin connector, and two PCI Express power cables

that's it, the 900 watt had too many cables that were not connected and a pain in the ass, to try to bundle them out of the way

I returned the power supply and got my refund back already,

doing some research for a modular power supply and a Full ATX case or a Server case, too give my self a little extra room

FYI, that 900 watt power supply is overkill. The 970 pulls max 145 Watts, in stock form. Overclocked versions may pull a little more, so your 460 should be plenty to run it. Unless your running tons of extras, like hard drives and CD-rom drives, your just burning money.

PCper review of MSI 970 Total system usage was just under 300 watts, even accounting for inefficiency of your power supply your well under its limit.

Nice, but would be nice to go fanless on ps don't think anybody makes one over about 500 watts though.

Also a full tower would help stay cooler and have room for everything and your hands to install parts during the build and maintenance. My latest setup is not quite as powerful as yours but it is very fast, I've been working at eliminating unnecessary fans and the noise they emit. Modular ps wiring is the way to go too, helps case cooling and looks way better.

@KGB24, clean your keyboard before you clean the pc insides. :flipoff::lmao:

I went to Best Buy with my Neighbor he was getting HDMI cables and I found this Corsair CX750M Modular Power Supply that is 750 watts, its a little over kill but not like before with the 900 watt one, I'm still looking for a Case. Due they make a bigger case than a Full size tower ???, are Server cases any bigger than a full tower ??? I looked but only could find the ones for a rack systems, like in a Tel/Com closet in a business, I want a desktop style server case or a Desktop case that is bigger than a full tower, cause that 970 Nvidia card is huge and there is not a lot of room , I can't put the side of the case back on cause of the wiring harness, now that is modular I don't need all of the harness so It easier to fit the side of the case back on. and with a larger case I can run more fans, for more air movement.


The 970 needs 500 to 600 watt, my current power supply is 460 watt so its got to go

The new 750 watt power supply is a 15% increase in power, so I should be good once, I find my new Desktop or Server case
