US M3 half track.

Very impressive machine work. That looks like a fun project.

You can do better than those rubber tracks though. If you throw any kind of power at it, and add some lateral torque to the equation, you'll throw the rubber tracks off.

There's all kinds of metal linked track sets available for 1:16th scale tanks, I'm not sure if that would be too small for this project or not but you could look into it. Metal tracks for 1:16th Pattons, Shermans, and M41 Bulldogs are pretty common these days. I'm not sure if those come close to what an M3 wore, but any of them will look and perform better than what you have now.

This one link has a bunch of different vendor links for tank parts: http://www.rctankhq.com/

One vendor I've dealt with personally. Phil knows his stuff about 1:16th scale rc tanks and is a straight-shooting honest vendor: http://www.rctankwars.com/

Many track sets will also include die-cast drive and idler wheels that have a lot more scale detail. Not that I'm knocking the wheels your dad has made, they're beautiful. But if you do find a metal track set that fits your build, the homespun wheels unfortunately are'nt going to work with them.

You are probably on your own for a body. Look around the non-crawler rc forum for builds by SemiJoe. He's a styrene master, he might be interested in helping you. At the least you can get a lot of inspiration and ideas from his builds.

More inspiration for you. These guys scratch-build 1:4 scale tanks, arm them with paintball markers, and have scale battles. Really cool stuff: http://www.rctankcombat.com/tanks/

Keep the pics coming guys, I love builds like this!!"thumbsup"

Thanks Big Mike. We have looked into all the tracks, but as its his project and not mine, it was felt they are too expensive. Honestly, aside from the Axial tranny we have maybe $10 into this thing. Scrap metal FTW! Dad just wants it to move under its own power, not looking to recreat scale manuevers. "thumbsup"

this is cool, how did I miss this?
Really liking it. Those tonka tracks should hold up the way kids beat on them.

very nice, but im left with only one question, with all that detail, please tell me a .50 is goin on the back, or the dual .50 :P

Between putting the dog down and installing all new hard wood flooring, dad finally got some time to crank out a front axle and transfer case. Leaf springs are up next.

(Spits out all of his hot chocolate) DDDDAYYYUMMM!!!! Thats the most skilled work ive seen on this site yet..:shock:

WOW . I wish I had that type of engineering/fabricating skills. Simply amazing work. This makes me want to go build something.

Thanks guys! Got the leaf springs almst done and mounted up front. I think they are too soft, so may re-engineer them, or use shocks with internal springs. I'll post a couple pics later after I fully wake up, LOL

Sorry for bad cell phone pics, my digicam battery is dead. Got the leaf springs mocked up. I dont like them, seem too soft. Main leaf is brass (bad, I know) rest are carbon fiber and staples are used as spring clamps. I will make some new leaf springs from spring steel when he isnt looking, LOL
