Went with the Ascender for my crawling fun

New SSD brass wheel weights. Simple screw on SSD wheels with 6ea 3mm cap head screws that are included with the weights.

Sweet. Do they affect the wheel offset/backspacing at all?


Have you noticed a performance difference with your lower shock mount moved outward?

Hi Smog. The new SSD wheel weights don't change the overall width vs the stock SSD wheel with stock hexes. The new ones where made to be direct fit with no other difference other than they each weigh 44 grams.

I just had the shock mod done that Rich Truillio had on his thread. I did just the left rear because that is the way the truck torque twists to. That really helped out compared to when I didn't have the mod done. Moving both shocks out was just another step that really at least to me finished off the issue. When I climb up steep rocks my truck no longer twists and lifts the right front wheel anymore. All I needed for that mod was some 30mm x 3mm cap head screws and some 3mm thin flat nuts. Since the nuts are very thin and are not locking I just used a little blue thread lock on them first and then installed them so now they won't back off. Went out 2 plus hours and never lossened up and the setup felt great to me.

I do like the white wheels and the RC4wd Wrangle MT tires although they don't work as good as the Hyraxx and my Pit Bulls but still like to use them as I really like the wheels and the tread pattern to me is very cool.

Outboarding the shocks is the best "free mod" you can do on the Ascender IMO. Really settles down the rear end.

Totally agree with you. I don't have the experience crawling as many of you do so if I could see the difference then I know it's a great mod.

I am in the same boat as you. My time passed driving RC’s is mostly with my kids and they want more speed in their runs. As a result most of my time on the crawlers it passed in the workshop late at night. I am slowly building up a crawler course in the back yard that is gaining their interest. I just wish I lived in a more rocky place

Few pictures from todays crawling action. Truck worked great all day long. Can't say enough about my Castle Creations Mamba Micro X and Castle Slate 2280kv motor on 3s. The new SSD fron weights also worked great and got to test more with the shocks moved out in the rear and can say that is a great mod. Just an awesome day to crawl. @nd time out on the Pit Bull XL and they worked excellent all day long.

Will see how the weather holds up. I want to get out and try my new Boom Racing Hustler tires out before it starts raining this week. Might try to sneak out a little bit on Thursday after my last work appointment to see how they work. If the work as good as they look to me then they should be awesome.

Have a question for you guys. Do you vent your tires or not? Now I have been venting mine like I would when I'm racing my 2wd buggy. I have two small holes in the tires. For me I don't run in water or mud so I like to vent my tires as I feel it give me more grip overall.

Any of you guys like to share your opinion on that matter please feel free to post as I would like to hear what you think.

I don't vent my tires because I run in water. If I never ran in water I'd vent my tires because it allows them to conform to the terrain so well.

Yes, I vent the tires either through the rim or two knife-slits between the treads at 180* around the tire.

If they're not vented, when we go up to the high desert the tires balloon, and when you get home they're all shrunk down. DISASTER!! :mrgreen:

If I drown my rig I usually plan to disassemble wheels to dry out the foams. We don't have much water around these parts unless you go looking for it.

I didn't too much lately to the Ascender but I did pick up a new stock Ford body like my truck came with. Not sure exactly how it will be painted but at least I have the body so sometime during the winter I will get to work on it. I figured it was nice to get it because then when I want to work on it I don't have to worry if it's on back order or something like that

Went thru my pictures today and redid them so they are not upside down so they look much better now. For some reason my tablet does that where my computer at work does them right side up so I had a few minutes and fixed them.

When my new Vanquish axles arrive I will get some pictures of those and post up. Should be a little later this week. Can't wait for these to arrive as its the last thing that I really wanted and everything else is stuff I would like to have down the road but my last durability piece was the front VVD axles.

I did get some new tools to carry with me on the trail. Come in a nice pouch to carry them so will be great to take on the trail with me. Perfect size. Comes with a 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 hex driver and then a phillips and straight screw driver and comes in pouch with clear cover so you can see them.

Unfortunately that wrench set doesn't have any hex's, and that's what our rigs primarily consist of. Those aren't gonna help you much, trail or bench. [shrug]

OTOH a company called WIHA from Germany makes nice hex wrenches for a lot less than your LHS - under $5 per tool, or a set with the whole range. We really only use 1.5mm, 2, 2.5, and very rarely 3.
Grainger has them or your local industrial supply. "thumbsup"

That set I have has all the metric sizes needed. It has 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 along with 5.5 nut driver and 7.0 driver a phillips so if I need much more than that I'm in trouble. Lol I bought that set because it all came in nice carry bag and has everything you need for the Ascender or any other metric R/C. Nice cheap set. I have $20 bucks for 7 tools is not bad.

After about 3 weeks my shop got in my STRC aluminum rear lock outs with the larger bearings. Going to try these and take off my weighted SSD ones and see how my Ascender works with that change . Now if I'm lucky nex weekend we will get some mid 40 degree temps and I will take my crawler out on the trails for a little test run.

Anyone know which one of softer out of the Proline 1.9 closed cell crawler foams or the CI 1.9 Deuces Wild? Looking at possibly running these in some Boom Racing Hustler tires.

They feel about the same, but the CI DW compress down faster than the Proline ime. Both good foams though.
