I've had plenty of crawlers in the past if not all of them over the years, ranging from the first Axial ax10 kits up to the most recent Vanquish H10 kit so I am def not new, but due to financial reasons I had to sell everything I had. Now I am in a better place and have funds to add one new rig. I am deciding between the VS4-10 straight axle builders kit or the Phoenix portal kit. If looking at value I am leaning towards the Phoenix portal kit because it includes the body, tires and VFD twin trans @ $380 and the builders kit is $300, so for another $80ish I feel like I'm getting more. My issue is I don't want the portals so I'd have to buy straight axles and longer shocks. I also might not be using the phoenix body.

Would it be worth getting the Phoenix, selling the portals & buying straight axles and getting a vfd twin? Or should I get the builders kit and re gear the front or rear axle for more overdrive?

I'm not really sure, but one thing i can almost guarantee is you'll be buying more than just this one rig. So don't put too much pressure on yourself on what to get...you'll probably end up with both down the line in some fashion:)

Any reason why you do not want the portals? No shame, sometimes I would rather have straight axles on some of my rigs too. Just curious.

If you arent planning to use the portals or the Phoenix body, that to me kind of loses its appeal. The wheels and tires are Ok I guess but you will be getting metal wheels and different tires eventually anyway...So really all you end up with is the VFD Twin.

In that case I would buy whatever kit you want that has the most parts you want to keep and use. Buy a VFD twin trans later maybe?

If i was buying a new rig today it would be between the h10 kit, or the vs410 portal builders kit. The portal kit is great value with the fully upgraded twin trans. Adding that stuff later is not cheap. Rtr doesn't do anything for me these days (it's going to get a fusion either way), and I personally don't like the Phoenix body.

I wish there was a cool 2.2 rig to choose from these days but I am between choosing the phoenix portal kit and the H10 kit, leaning more towards the H10. What would be the one Vanquish upgrade you’d add to the build? I’m between the driveshafts, not only for strength but more weight or the machined knuckles.

Does the fusion system fit in the VFD? I thought I read they were too long?

The only fusion that doesn't fit iirc is the original (old) 1800kv. The fusion pro 2300 and both the SE versions fit fine.

I'd recommentd 3rd members for the F and R Axle for good upgrade. Keep that pinion and ring gear well meshed.

I'm still trying decide between the h10 or phoenix kit...

I've been thinking going rtr but I know the brushed motor and esc and stock servo will be replaced almost immediately so just doesn't seem like a smart move.

If you're already sure your upgrading them then for sure the only viable thing left would be the tx/rx, which are ok for rtr.....

So I would agree.

I'm a recent comer to the VP line. Built the Optic as my first full out VP Build. Used parts for my bastard build, and have VP on verious rigs, but not a full build.
Not tried the Phoenix build. Got my 2nd VP build on the table in the box for when I get a bit of time. Maybe going to squeeze that out this weekend. An Origin.

And its not like there is a hot market for pullouts of rtrs. lol

You mentioned the straight axle builder's kit in your first post. You're sounding like this is where you really want to start and, it's a great beginning. You can make it what you want slowly over time.

Yea RTR is def out. I bought a RTR optic when they first came out and now I am remembering the ring gear and locker were one piece, I think sintered so that would be another upgrade costing over $100 for machined gear sets and good lockers. Speaking of gears anyone remember when the og scx10 came with plastics trans gears lol?

My shopping cart at Amain is getting out of control haha, I think I'm going H10 and later down the road maybe get a vs410.
