I got inspired by the cheap servos hotness tread.

Use this thread to discuss your cheap shocks do they work, what do you recommend, should we buy or stay away.

Also when you do post a review please indicate brand, where you got em from, and measurements eye to eye compressed and uncompressed so we can determine total travel.

Thanks.

Also please move this if it's not in the appropriate section.

Don't know if they are considered cheap but the Gmade XDs are insane quality / price.

I using the 103mm diaphragm shocks at 25$ on Amain Hobbies. They are the only one with aluminium shock caps.

Not too sure how cheap is cheap to you. I use a lot of Traxxas 4962 big bores. About $60 on ebay for a package of 8. That's about $7.50 per shock. Aluminum housing and cap. 4" pin to pin extended and 3-1/8" pin to pin compressed. Big bonus with these shocks is NO LEAKS. Springs are pretty stiff and although supplied shock oil weight is not stated I believe it is 60W. I use either Losi or Axial Wraith shock springs as there are lots of spring rate selections and both brands fit well to these shocks. Shock oil I use with the different springs can be anywhere from 10W to 30W depending on vehicle. Pre-load is by snap in clips rather than thread adjuster, snap in clips not favored by a lot of people.

I guess cheap is relative. Personally, I think these are cheap based on the quality and features.

You are right the cheapness is relative to each and every one of us . The goal is to promote a discussion on what works, for who, and for what in a kind of all in one shock thread.

But as cheapness reference I was looking at AliExpress for some axspeed blue aluminum shocks at I believe 25$ cdn for 4

Thanks for your participation.

I'm fairly certain the included Traxxas shock oil is 30 weight:

https://www.amazon.com/Traxxas-1666-Silicone-Shock-Oil/dp/B0006O5GKY

30 weight is the usual starting point for 1/10th rock crawler shocks and is included in most kits.

I have 2 pairs of Traxxas 2662 (XX-Long) Big-Bores, picked up the ones slightly longer than standard Axial Bomber King shocks - going to use the stock Axial Bomber kit springs as they fit perfectly and 30 weight oil for a relatively light Bomber build.

I'll try to remember to get the exact measurements edited into this post after I get around to digging them out of the shoebox of new parts I've got set aside.

I also bought the Gmade XD Diaphragm 103mm shocks, they come with medium springs but options include soft and hard replacements:

"Length (Mounting hole to hole): 103mm Shock Body Diameter: 14mm Spring Diameter: 19mm Spring Length: 68mm Full Shaft Travel Range: 31mm (without Rubber bump stop) Shaft Diameter: 3.5mm"

Unsure as to the included shock oil weight, haven't found that mentioned anywhere yet - I will likely use 40 weight Team Associated shock oil for them and I've ordered the hard springs as they will be going on a heavyweight modded Bomber.

Traxxas TRX-4 GTS shocks are super-nice, I picked up a set of take-offs from a Tactical version on fleaBay for very cheap - they are fairly short - 90mm.

"Silver-anodized aluminum bodies
Threaded bodies with collars easily adjust ride height
O-ring cap seal and dual X-ring shaft seals"

I'm currently only using them on the rear of my Vaterra Ascender K10, with a Boom Racing aluminum rear shock tower set with multiple shock mounting locations - using the lowest holes they still lower the ride height a bit from stock shocks, but I am running 4.19" tall tires so that's actually desirable.

If I can get a non-defective set of Boom Racing front shock towers, I'll be installing the other pair of GTS shocks as well. Just using the included shock oil for now, they were prefilled because they were take-offs - haven't leaked yet!

I picked up a pair of Xtra Speed 100mm aluminum shocks that are internally sprung - I might use them as secondary rear shocks on the lightweight Bomber build - maybe without oil, as the primary shocks will take care of the rebound control with their oil.

I only bought them because they were just $10 from a member. They are visually similar to RC4WD polished-aluminum shocks but with larger diameter bodies - the rod-ends are aluminum as well.

Probably the best RC money you have ever spent. They are A1 in my book! "thumbsup"

Is there a standard stroke amount for a given shock lenght ?

Example a gmade rsd 80 mm shock has a 21mm shock travel

A gmade rsd 100mm has 31 mm shock travel

A gmade piggie back 90mm has 26mm travel

Is this the same for other makes is there a standard ?

Thanks

I dont think there is any standard.

My stock kings are 104mm and the new gmade XDs are 103mm.
But side by side, the gmade have a really shorter travel and a bigger bump stop so less flex for almost the same lenght.

Would you be so kind as to post the eye to eye compressed and uncompressed lengths ?

Got mine yesterday, they are about 130mm extended eye to eye and about 90 mm compressed.

Threw some green slime on the seals and took em for a run on my 1/10 tuber and they were great. I have been running a similar Kyosho truggy shock on it for 10 years with internal springs above and below the piston. The yeah racing did great for me and no leaks after one battery, yet haha.

They come with a lot of optional springs to tune with as well.

The best cheap shocks I've used are the GMade shocks. The only exception is the G-Transition shocks. I hate those.

TRX-4 GTS Shocks for me too! Have them on 3 of my rigs. They are super smooth and the do not leak! You can find them on Ebay for under $50 for 4 shocks. Mine were brand new take-offs from a TRX-4 Tactical truck.
