Why I'd Avoid HobbyKing.com

I love HK, and I went out and posted 5 star reviews at all the websites I could find. A+++ seller. I guess it must be a fluke that the 40 or so lipo batteries I bought from them all showed up, and worked.

My batteries have always showed up but I've had a few duds and I bought some nanotech's that don't perform. That's my last time dealing with them.

i've spent over $2000 with them in the past year or so (over 40 seporate orders) and never had any hickups, yes there are some horror stories about hobbyking but you are spending pennies compared to the alternative, IMO the risk is accepted when you press the "checkout" button, i've recieved bad batterys or broken heli parts (I dont count these as bad expieriances) I simply add the defective parts to my cart again on my next order, sure beats the hell out of paying 100-500% more at the LHS.

Yes, there are many clones available, we know that... But at the same time, there are many products out there that are produced and sold by an unknown company to well known companies who rebadge them and sell them with an insane markup with no investment of their own other than advertising and the purchase of product. I'm curious to know just how much of HK's product is rebadged or cloned, and whether or not the "rebadged" products are the original. The only few things I know of for sure that are clones are the Rovan Baja 5b's they sell, as well as what looks like an old Traxxas Monster Buggy from Turnigy- then again, who's to say that the TMB was ever actually designed and produced by Traxxas themselves. It always looked like it was a jump away from their own design language, to me.

first off, i have yet to have any issues with HK, except for their crazy shipping through the Swiss post that goes to Switzerland before coming to the US, and the fact it always seems that either everything is out of stock or something comes up where you FINALLY can get pretty much everything you want through the US warehouse, EXCEPT for a little $3 piece (their brand of dean's connectors for instance with my last order) that is only stocked in the Asian warehouse, so you have to do you whole order through Hong Kong.

honestly, another reason i have more confidence in ordering stuff from HK as opposed to say hobbypartz or nitrorcx or xheli, is because they post up ALL of the product reviews, good or bad. that other chain of online vendors will only post positive reviews, if they are even real! i have experienced this first hand from ordering stuff from xheli, based on customer reviews on their website, got the same thing, and it was total junk when i got it, went to post a negative review, got the whole "we have to check for content" message, and my comment never was posted. that kind of experience has made me leary of that chain, and it makes me think all of the upbeat reviews are just fakes.

now as far as them "reverse engineering" everything, i don't buy that, either. especially things like ESC's, motors, even most of their RTR's! we all know the ESC's and motors all come from china, and how many times have you seen the same motor or esc badged under 3 or 4 different brands, all with varying price points.

and it's funny badge engineering came up in this thread, cause i was thinking about the 5B "clones" lately, and really, who is to say that in reality that the HPI 5B isn't a redaged Rovan or KM 5B? they just put HPI stickers on it and almost doubled the price...

No disagreements here on any of that, save for the Baja... The Rovan and KM models are clones, and they're not all the same. There are a few variations in overall design, and the quality of the plastics, and other materials, including the engine (also a knockoff) are not on par with the HPI model. The general rule of thumb with those has been that if a part breaks, replace it with a stock HPI parts and you'll up the durability quite a bit.

If you can park an HPI Baja next to a clone and can't tell the difference in quality, you might be blind. The parts may have relatively the same shape, but the quality is quite different. Not saying the HPI justifies the huge money, either... prices on all RC stuff these days is absolutely out of control for a box of plastic bits.
There is a lot of rebadging of low end ESC's etc, but I would bet the vast majority of stuff you think is name brand without the sticker actually isn't. You are their target demographic and they know how you think... and they fool people like you into buying their crap.
What sucks is that the companies that really made high end shiznit will go under because of the crap flooding the market. The cheap crap may work, but those who appreciate the high end stuff will lose that option before too long.

Dude, almost everything in RC including with big box companies are made in Asia.

Lets talk about the RC18 which was made first in europe, then introduced in the US, then all the so called knockoffs were sold on ebay. When the truth is... Those were the originals. And everything was the same but the name.

Just about everyones RC has parts made in China.

Those saying the brand name companies will go under couldn't be more wrong. Those brand name companies are still the companies that the LHS and most distributors will sell to the general public. These cheapo places like Hobbypartz and Hobbyking are still the little known "diamond in the rough" for people who don't mind taking a risk. Joe Shmoe RC enthusiast will continue to buy the brand name products because he believes there is a different level of quality involved, and if there is, those buying the junk will soon learn to buy the name brand... And if the name brand is just a batch of the cheapo with a sticker slapped on it, then I say buy the cheapo. Many of these cheapo brands do their own R&D and produce their own products, or simply rely on old tech, not at all thieving from anyone else, and since almost all of our RC stuff is produced overseas, why pay an arm and a leg when you don't have to?

I never even hinted at an assertion that this stuff wasn't pretty much all made in China. What you need to understand is China isn't one big factory. It is thousands of factories pumping out all kinds of stuff- many of those companies steal from each other and rip off each other, as well as the companies with whom they contract to produce name brand items for other companies. They spy on each other, steal from each other and in some cases will back-door products to each other to counterfeit or reverse engineer. It's all a shell game of theft, lies and BS. There are, however, some companies that are somewhat above that and produce really nice equipment and value their contract $ enough not to overtly F their customers in the arse... but there aren't many of those companies.

The high end stuff will die off. I can't recall the last plane I saw with an Axi motor... they're all Chinese copies of something else, sometimes Chinese copies of Chinese brands. Most people who would have been running high end brushless now run cheapo stuff and blow it off as "I'll just buy another one if it breaks- it's cheap" instead.
