SMALL UPDATE: Wheels

No pictures just yet, but I'm working with someone on designing and machining some custom aluminum rims for the sand rail. Once the design is finalized and I get some screen shots I'll post them. I just wanted to let anyone interested in this build know that it hasn't been forgotten. Things are still in the works, just coming along slowly for now.

OH and here are a couple of screen shots from the article in Xtreme RC Cars magazine that this rig appears in. These are just a couple of pages from the article, there's more to it.

Very cool, IMO they should feature scale rigs more often.

Thanks, the sand rail is still in the works. I'm just waiting for the custom wheels. I'll be working on the chassis soon though.

I've seen them online. Just do a search for New Bright FJ or Nikko FJ. You'll find several online stores selling them. I got mine in a trade from someone on here.

Very cool rig mate

The brass work is extremely clean. Haven't tried brass as i was worried about the strength and durabitily. Top job

Hey where did you pick up the white FJ? All i can find around are the yellow ones that would be hard to paint white...?

Did you read any of the posts or just look at the pictures? The white FJ is NOT the FJ that is discussed in this build thread. The white FJ was someone else saying "hey here is my FJ" in this build thread. There is a build thread on the white FJ. Use the search function to find it. And it didnt come white. It was painted. The Nikko FJ bodies come in blue or yellow.

Plus you can strip the original color off the bodies. Just soak them in degreaser for a few hours.

How are your bumpers and rails holding up? I am thinking of soldering up some if I know they hold up well to trail running.

So far they are holding up fine. The bumpers are getting a little bent up, but that just adds to the realism.

I just have the cheapy solder gun that only goes to 550 degrees so I am assuming I will need to get a hotter gun. Would that be correct? I would rather solder than braze it seems easier or I feel more comfortable doing it. What silver solder did you use?

Silver solder melts at higher temps. You'll definitely need a hotter iron to get the silver solder to flow smooth and create a good joint. Regular solder is too soft and won't hold up. Brazing brass (especially the thin stuff) is hard. If it gets too hot (which can easily happen especially if you have larger torch) you'll just burn through the brass. If you don't have experience brazing I would suggest using a very hot soldering iron and silver solder for sure. If you don't want to spend the money on an iron you can get a hand held torch from Radio Shack. As long as it puts out a hot flame you'll be good. Plus get some flux for silver soldering and small brushes for applying the flux.

Would a weller or Hako soldering station produce enough heat for this application? Also what kind of flux and solder did you use. I have some of that thick silver solder from home depot. Will that work? I think its for plumbing use.

Those irons should work. As long as it gets up to 800º F. I'd have to look at the specific solder and flux I used (I don't remember off-hand).

The NB FJ is on the smaller side. The Nikko FJ is more detailed and comes closer to fitting the SCX chassis better. I have both. Thats why i know.
