Default Building on a Budget: My Scout X Trail

My Budget Build:

Goals: To build a fun scaler/basher out of parts I have that are used or deemed un-useable, and to prove a rig can be built on a budget.

Parts:
• Delrin X Trail: Received for testing before the aluminum version was released
• Aluminum skid: Made myself, only cost was material.
• Steel rear/front supports for frame and mounting body and front bumper: cost of material again.
• Axial D Shafts: $20
• Pede tranny that’s really rough may have sand in the gears and slightly bent top shaft. Probably worth about $10
• Used 45t lathe motor: $12
• 21t pinion 83t spur: $8
• 7.4v 2100 mah lipo: An old well used lipo, picked it up for $30
• Imex 1.9 claws on hpi stockers: bought the claws for $20, wheels are only $12. Made them myself about a year ago.
• Aluminum short shocks rear: got these in a trade, worth $20 maybe?
• Associated buggy shocks up front: took them off a B3, $10
• TLT axles with machined c's up front: These are in bad shape, built from spare parts. The front axle has a tooth missing from the ring gear and the ears were broke on the case. I used some prototype machined axle C’s I had. They never fit right so it took some grinding to make them work. Rear axle had holes in the case that I filled with JB but the gears are find. Total value: $50
• Duratrax esc $25
• JR 590m servo $10
• HPI WK tx/rx $10
• Proline scout body painted rust on the inside, green/black on the outside. Purchased on sale $18
• HL tranny skid plate chopped for front bumper/skid: $4
• 1/8" x 1/2" bent steel for bumper: steel stock $3
• 4 link front and rear: sleeved all thread lower links and jato upper links $20

Total invested ;)
$282

That’s RTR! My value on some of the parts might be high or low, some of it is worthless, the pede tranny I would never sell to anyone lol. Same with the worn lathe motor and axles. But they are perfect for this project!

I challenge anyone to start their own budget build, it’s a blast. Making things work from only what you have is how the RCC scene used to be before all these parts were readily available and bolt on. Take the challenge and learn something while you are at it. I still learn new tricks every time I build a rig and I can’t wait to finish this thing and get it out on the rocks!

Looks good, I like the paint. Being a cheap bastard myself, I'm digging this. BTW I have less than $300 in each of my rigs

Thats funny that you did this. I just built a K5 the other day with all stuff I had laying around. Goes something like this.

diaz frame from old truck
TLT axels from the same old truck
extra alluminum arms.
extra axel C's from MSD
Had a K5 body that I have never used and been sitting on it since they came out
Shocks from old trucks I had
Pede trans that is in about the same condition as yours
Had an extra spektrum reciever that I thought was broke
Super rooster that I thought was busted as well
Traded my 2.2 mudlsingers for some Trail Dr's

I think the only thing I really bought specific for this was some straight axel adapters. Other wise it was all stuff I had laying around. Feels good to build a pretty sweet truck with little to no money spent right now. Utilize all the crap that I had sitting around!

I like your rig Brandon, hope to see it out at Folsom one day soon!

Badass Brandon, I love how the front axle sit slightly forward, gives it that "I swapped in longer chevy springs from the junk yard look"
