I like this, I may only narrow one side to make it like a FJ.

Great idea and write-up!

to make that really look pimp try some mini cooper 1.5 wheels with reduced 1.9 trail docs. They clear the C's on TLTs, not sure if they would clear the WK's.

I have some 18MT tires on wabash wheels which are 1.5". they almost look like mud tires on wagon wheels. they fit in the wheel wells much better, but when I drilled one out to put on the WK axle, center diff clearance was down around a 1/2".

I can make the WK's narrower, but I can't make the pumpkin smaller.

The highlift tires are giving me about an inch now. I don't want to get much smaller.

I had thought about using the 1.5 sidewall, and scabbing in onto a full size 1.9 tire. the wheel would be the correct diameter, but the tire would have huge side wall.

post a pic of the 18mt tires!

I hear ya-that pumpkin is huge!
I'm using the mini's on my jeep crew cab and I dont have much clearance under my TLT's either...it is what it is. More a challenge to drive I guess, lol.

conversely, you could run trail doc XL's reduced to 1.5 on the mini or 18mt wheels so you'd end up with about a 3.7" tall tire but with more sidewall. 0.4" split across the top and bottom of the wheel wont look terribly larger than standard. would look more scale appropriate too. its something I'm considering for my range rover.

looking closely, I probably dont have much more than 1/2" as is...

awesome job on those axles!
ive been thinkin about narrowing my tlts for a similar project on the back burner right now.
i might have to switch over to wk axles!
ive got a lunchbox body with narrowed tlt rims and 1/18 nylint tires.

scale wise, the wheels are about perfect 15"!
the tires are about the height of tamiya bfgs.

Looks like that will be a cool ride. I had almost thought of trying to get another body, and make myself a long wheelbase van to get more than a 8" WB.

Wheels and tires look really good. What are they?

Thanks.

@doug, it think the ones in his pic are from the 1:18 nylint

mine are stompers on pajeros

it really drives a lot better than i thought it would given it's width.

overall width 7.25" overall height 9.5" wheelbase 8.5" overall length 13", 14" with spare.

I took it real easy for about the first twenty minutes not wanting the new LB body to take damage, but after teh first couple of accidental rolls, i started worrying less.

what surprised me more was how easily it danced back onto it's wheels from it's side.

I've been debating taking the time to do a step by step on the chassis, I took the photos, I just haven't uploaded or done any posting.
There was enough interest/confusion in a "how do I make a chassis" thread in noob gen I might put it thre as a Hairba11's guide to custom chassis TVP edition.

after running the narrowed WK axles for a while inder the lunch box, I did take about a 13 roll tumble down a hill.
The only damage I took was one on my shaved down stock WK link mounts.
I took off the link mounts and drilled holes to replace them with some of the two hole tamiya link mounts.
not bad for as hard as I have been running the thing.

my next project for these is my motorhome. I will see how well they handle pushing that much weight around.

Update time!

I have been running a pair of these under my winnebago, and did end up with some breakage.

keep in mind this is a 22-25 lb truck that got hit by a radio flyer wagon with crawlers and a toolbox in it being pulled by a 7 year old

The welded section ended up breaking. I cut squares of material and used them as tie plates after re-welding the axle case

Still working now. just got back from a trip to crawl-a-palooza.
