Default Dad's Scale Truck

When I was a kid, my Dad had a 1978 Chevy Longbed that he used to run his business (A/C repair) with. We loved this truck and have some old pictures of it an a photo album somewhere (my sister is looking for them). This truck was stolen from our driveway and parted out in Mexico (pieces were found later). My dad has been quite beneficial in my life these past few years, so I thought I'd build him a 1.9 crawler version of his old truck.

Here are the specs:
TLT's
K23L
1980 Chebby Longbed Proline Body (closest I could find)
Shaved Straight rear w/Dinky Link
12" WB, 8.25" TW
1.9" Crushers on white Landy rims w/Mem Foams
Bent lower links
Tamiya Low Friction Shocks
Stampede Tranny w/Integy 55T (and unknown spur with a large pinion gear for speed)
Traxxas XL5 Waterproof (left over from the Slash)
7 Cell 1600mAh pack
TwistedXT LED kit
Towerpro servo
Scale goodies (ox/acet torch and beer cooler that were ALWAYS in the back of the 1:1)

Onto the pics:

(it sat on jackstands for quite a while)

Just so you know, here are the factory paint colors that were offered that year...the one my dad had was Red Metallic:

I have a few details to finish up before the delivery date (Christmas morning) and will post up some final pics....he might even let me get a snapshot of him with it.

Thanks for the compliments! I hope to get the light buckets built soon (probably will use foam).....I think it will look better than just the clear section.

I used those little things that toys come in from those 25 cent machines you see around for light buckets. I think this is cool to do . I did the same thing with my Dad's work truck. I wish he was still around to give it to him.

Ricky, yeah I followed your build when you did it a while back. I liked the idea so I moved onward! I doubt mine will be as scale as yours....I wanted him to have something that was semi-scale and still be able to crawl well. I also wanted something low maintenance and easy to run for him (hence the body posts).

I'm with you on that. But this old truck crawls well. You and your Dad will have fun I'm sure.

That was a good video Ricky!

He lives in the Central Texas Hillcountry....there is PLENTY of crawling spots....even in their backyard.

Very nice clean build so far. A drop bed would be cool.

Thanks!

Yeah, I thought about doing a Styrene bed and still might, if time allows.

Thanks! Yeah, he loved that truck!

BTW, here are some pics showing the paint in natural light. For the red, I mixed red with metallic pumpkin-ish orange and this is how it turned out:

Thanks, I didn't mean to highjack your thread. I just get pumped when I see somebody doing a build from the heart.

Thanks for the compliments! And...not a problem at all Ricky. I've been working on the mounts for the LED's this evening and have finished the headlights and front turn signals.

BTW, this isnt the first RC gift I have built and given...I built an RC replica of my father-in-law's 65 Mustang Fastback:

This was a BIG hit. As you can see...he entered BOTH into a recent car show.

I got the lights mounted up last night. It is kind of difficult to see (because the white LEDs seem to overpower them in the eyes of the camera), but it has amber turn signals as well as white headlights and red brakelights.

(never mind the subliminal messages in the background)

Hi,

I am building a scaler. Can you help me with how you created your interior?
