| THE GENERAL YOTA TRUGGY 1.9 Build
Thought i would post some of my progress of my build for the 2009 MSD Scale Nationals. I know just about everyone here builds Toyotas... but i have always wanted one. My first truck was an 86 Toyota 4x4 and i LOVED that thing! A good friend of mine has an 81 that is trailered to-and-from the trails. I feel like a kid again every time i go out on a trail run with him! I dont have the money to build a 1:1 with two kids, so 1:10 scale was the only option. I ordered the body parts feb of 08 and it took tower nearly 10months to get here so i had a lot of time to think about what i wanted. With all of the phenomenal builds here on RCC its hard to come up with something original, so here we go.... I had never done a tuber before, nor had I done any brazing... so it was an uphill battle from the begining. I ended up using 3/16in brake line, safty-silv 56 with flux and map gas to braze the tube together. After a couple test pieces, and no guidence i figured out the heat required to get the solder to stick. Originally i wanted to get better pipe, but found that enough 3/16in DOM Chromally tube was going to run about $100!! I started with a design in CAD as a starting point... More to come later... Bunch of updates cramped into one. i get so busy i forget to take pictures along the way... Better pics of the frame. New parts came in on tuesday! Thanks to RPP! I really like these 2.0 soft 8's from CAC. And the winch Painted the body. This will eventually get a confederate flag on the top. Havent decided if i want to go with printed water xfer or air brush... Needs some tread plate to cover the holes... Rides high without any guts! Started work on the front bumper... Got the winch all mounted up... I already went and test drove it before taking the pics... so there are scratches already... but they add character right?... Rides a lot lower with everything in now... Rides high in the rear, and slightly in the front. Front has threaded body shocks so they are easy to tune... think I need softer springs in the rear. I have some shorter ones i might try. Thats all for now... still need to get the winch wired, another battery, lights, and tool box/fuel cell/propane tank installed/built. Full rock lighting for night driving is a must! So far i have 6 Mag light Krypton bulbs wired for all 4 corners and the headlights. Comments please or suggestions? More to come later |

Thanks! It was a lot easier than i thought it would be! The only problem i had was getting the solder to stick to some 1/4in brass bar stock... It didnt matter how hot the brass was, the solder refused to stick to it... I was going to use the brass to drill and tap the ends for mount points onto the frame, but i instead used M3 nuts soldered to the ends of the 3/16 tube. Seemed to work just fine.

| Getting closer to completion!
More progress, rock sliders! They arent perfect, but they get the job done! Also got the winch working. Dug up a small 800mah 2cell lipo for the winch and a 2000mah single cell lipo for the lights. Chris agreed to do the flag on the top! I asked him if he could make it to look weathered, tattered, torn, and burnt... he said no problem! He used to work in sfx so i trust his judgment! |

More progress... Got the inner fenders completed and a tray for the electronics under the hood. Everything will get water proofed before may. Also put softer springs in the rear... Still sits a little high, but it crawls well, so i may just leave it. Rock Sliders are mounted, painted, and tested scaleoffroad.de had emblems for the sides... anyone know where to get one for the grill on the front drivers side? Going to falls park later today, hope to get some video and more stills! Pics... And the Flex Shot. |

A friend of mine really liked the primerd look too... just didnt look right to me. @fishfever, are you talking about the wheels and tires? I will take a pic in the morning... im about to go into a coma from lack of sleep in the past two days... The CAC wheels dont seem to stick out any farther than the stock hilux wheels. I will take a measurement for you as well. I wasnt sure how they would look either at first being 2.0dia at the bead, but they give the tires a unique profile. Two thumbs up to troy, IMO they are BA!!! Went to the corbin park this afternoon with a friend of mine, had so much fun i only took one pic... Im really impressed with how well the flat irons hook up. I was able to make it up some very steep rock without any problems. The body is starting to show signs of abuse now, and the black primer is showing through in some places... I will start to weather the body and tubes once i get a few more scratches. I did have one hard fall and cracked the passenger side a-pillar (again) guess im going to have to reinforce with some styrene... I dont understand why tamiya would put a body line on the outside, then not thicken the plastic behind it!!! Its like they want it to break there!!! The PS is so thin in places you can see daylight when looking from the inside... Last edited by AxelRod; 04-19-2009 at 03:17 AM. Reason: spelling errors... blah! |
