Talking Subaru Brat build - the SCX10 KILLER

Building a new 1.9 rig to "hang" and beat the onslaught of SCX10's that everyone seems to be bringing to comps these days. They do work well....even if they look like crap. Haha.
Bobbed Subaru body, short wheelbase, Axial trans/axles, low to the ground with droop, very little tube work to keep her light. Should work well.
We'll see.

1st mock-up. No longer using the coilovers or XL's.

Current setup....needing more tubework.

Stripped down and finished welding up, added more tubing.

The frame has a roller along the front, to help it "roll" rather than scrape the bumper. Will also be adding rollers to the corners. A servo winch will be mounted in the bed.

Nice work so far. Definately thinking outside the box.

I like Brat's, having done one myself...
I'd suggest this might look better if you dovetailed the front, pinching it the width of the headlights. also I'd suggest removing the little fender tails altogether, cutting it from the B pillar down (where it goes horizontal) and slightly angled forward like the door line, and making it a cab only type truggy.

Yeah, it may look better with a dove'd front, but I like the wide front end....remember, 1.9's are "supposed" to resemble a street-legal rig that can be driven to the trail. I try to build my rigs to suit the scale comp rules in my area. I still think this one's a bit outside those rules though...haha!

I think I will cut the sides off like you suggested. I got this body as it is now. I'd have prefered to have the full bed.
I've seen your Subie build...cool.

First, nice frame work, a little different than what's out there...

Second....... not to be mean or anything, but...

How exactly is this a SCX10 killer?

You are using the same axles, trans, wheels, and tires. All you've got different is the frame.

So basically you've got an SCX10, so is it going to kill itself?

I thought when I was pulling up this thread that you were going to use the stock tamiya brat running gear and claim to have a SCX10 killer.

Oh well...

Hahaha....you must own an SCX10? If this were an SCX10, it would have the same link length and geometry, same junk plastic balls, chassis, crappy shock setup, wheelbase, all the doodads that it has. It's much more than just a different frame...if you LOOK. Remember, an SCX is JUST an AX10 w/a ladder frame. And the wheels and tires(Proline) are just mockups that I pulled off this....

Do you consider all scratchbuilt cars using AX10 axles and trans AX10's???
You do realize that AXIAL sells axles and trans separately for building yer own rig.....using a few of their parts doesn't make it an AX or SCX....oh well.

I don't own an SCX10 (see sig...), waste of money. I'd just buy the axles/trans like you said.

I think that those are the most important parts in determining what rig it is. Example, my WK/AX Trail Racer has WK axles and an AX10 Transmission, so it's both.

My AX10 Comp Crawler only has the axles and trans left from the original kit, but it's still AX10 because without those axles/trans it would be a pile of plastic and metal parts.

My idea of a {insert product name} killer is one that uses parts made by a different company than what it already is.

Example; I can't say I've got a Stang Killer if I just drop a Chevy engine in a fox body. It'll kill almost any stang on the line, but it's got stang parts, so it's just a Chevy Stang...

I like what you did with your build and I can't wait to see more...

Ah...difference of opinion , it's all good.......the real point of this build is to out perform all the box stock SCX-10's loaded with "scale" extras that are becoming more prevelant at comps. It's too easy these days to "buy" a truck.....I like fabbing my own stuff. So if I fab the majority of the stuff, what is it then???

I agree, there are too many "Insta-Scalers" out there.

I'm from the "Built, not bought" mindset and like the experience of building things myself.

It's called whatever you think there's more of, two axles and a trans are AX10, so I consider it a "custom" AX10.

I get what you're saying though, it's a "Box-Stock-SCX10-Killer"

Cool

Now get back to work and show us more build pics.

I prefer this....

I did paint the frame last night and prime the body....so I'll be assembling the chassis tonight and maybe even throwing paint on the body.

CRUSH LIL JOE? I dont think so. At least we will have the same wheelbase. If I had built lil joe they way I wanted instead of the way I should, it wouldnt have a tall heavy cage, just a driver to absorb the rollovers like a true old school military jeep. watch a 59s army show, no cage or rollbar. You know this is a sick build, so lets see the paint dang it. that frame is already sick by itself.

Haha...jk Grim......looks good.

I'm sorry to say fellas, but the paint on this one is not going to be as nice as past rigs.
