Default Newbright JK truggy

I scored a beat up Newbright JK at my local Radio Shack and decided to start another project.

I considered doing a 2.2 scaler project, but quickly decided I needed something more original. So the cutting began.

After some styrene, green puddy and a coat of primer.

Looking like a proper ratrod.

Mock up with the Honcho cage.

Testing flex with custom rear shocks and relocated mounts.

That is F%$#ING awesome.

NICE WORK!!!!
Where are the rear shocks mounted up top. And what wheel base did you start with TR or Honcho?

Thanks. I relocated the shocks inboard and down from the stock position.

Once I found the perfect location for the shocks, I made a mount using delrin sheet and servo mounts. The new location changes the spring rate (WAY to stiff) so I rebuilt the shocks with a new hole in the plunger, super soft springs and 50wt oil.

The result is a boat load more articulation from the rear.

The links are 1/4"aluminum rod threaded to 4M with RC4WD rod ends. The wheelbase is barely longer than a stock Honcho in the rear.

I decided to replace the plastic TR bumper with a home made winch bumper with minimal overhang and uber-approach angles. First off I bent up some brass.

Ugly brass all tacked up in place.

Next up, the interior....

Wow looks very good.

I may have to do a project like this, with body cutting and using the same body!

Really like how the honcho cage looks with it

Thanks! Here's some shots at last week's comp. Maiden voyage for this rig.

The suspension mods works perfectly. I couldn't have been happier.

I painted the silver honcho bed sheet metal with satin black. Then dry brushed it over with silver paint to bring out the diamond plate and show some age.

A good shot of the new rear articulation.

....oops. If you notice, I even took out the gate when I rolled...

A few shots of the interior.

I cut up the stock newbright interior to fit snugly around the trans and Axial spur gear while keeping the body as low as possible.

A few close up shots of the finished interior.

I had rc4wd OEM steels on it but the drive pin notch was cut too deep so the wheels rubbed on the hubs. Id love to find some proper steel scale wheels.

Nice build. I had the same issue and contacted RC4WD and they sent me new hubs that were cut right. Drop them an email.
