| Project howsyouraspen FJ40 build
Okay, so I've lurked long enough at other's amazing builds. Time to get underway with redeux of my Losi MRC. Since, I've had it a few years I just worked off what I had. Ditched pretty much everything but the tranny and axles. Had the L-Trail already so I ended up just using that for this build. I'm not a welder, but I can solder. So I went the "light duty" route with 5/32" brass tubing. Specs: Proline Bushwhacker Body MRC lengthened to an 11.5" wb I believe MRC drivetrain, all steel, and locked up MRC CVD's Losi 0 ackerman knuckles EPS(I think) Aluminum wideners TCS L-Trail chassis Custom Traxxas & Axial links Old Kyosho Option House gold shocks, set up for droop 1.9 Axial 8 holes Rock Lox Proline Flat Iron mem foams Locked Up's Trail Ready look bead lock rings Losi MRC trans/receiver Trinity Monster Horsepower motor w/ 9 toof pinion Tekin FXR HiTech 645 MG LEDs soon to follow. Enjoy the pics! Here's how she started, used and abused. Cuttin up the Bushwhacker! Couple basic starter tabs for the tube frame Got the beltline hoop made, as well as the window hoop. Used some 1/8 tubing for a tighter bend, and soldered it inside the 5/32" around the windshield. Rear frame mount Couple more rear shots Made some gussets for the roof, and a spare tire mount. Front bumper was a little tight. But I think I got'er knocked out. We'll see how well it holds up. Got it about wrapped up. Few minor touches, and braces. Body sprayed with some Krylon Brushed Nickel paint. Trimmed a little bit more. Hobby Hut is a mess! Time to tidy up a bit. Cleaned up a bit. Time for some paint! I've always like the look of old aircraft Iron Oxide Green. So I found some Rustoleum Gloss. Matched up pretty close I think. Took her all apart. Prepped, & cleaned the chassis. After a couple days of painting, finished it up. Turned out how I wanted. Got it put back together. Still need to clean up some wiring. Added some jewelers chain, & fabbed up some lower shock mounts out of flat brass plate. Still have to paint those up. Shot of the Jerry Can mount. Couple shots with the body on. Still deciding on some graphics & or airbrushing some fake panels?? Shot of the Proline light bar. Soon to have some LED's fitted. Have to upload some more pics. I'll take a break for now. Still need to sort out the steering, and front links a bit... Thanks for looking. -Alex |

Damn dude not too shabby for your first go at it. What are your plans for the rear fenders, let em stay or are they getting cut off?

Hey thanks Salmon- Haven't decided yet. I just sorta doing stuff off the cuff with this thing. But yeah, gonna trim em off, or round em a little. Any ideas? Thanks pardon- Appreciate it. Last edited by howsyouraspen; 06-30-2011 at 03:36 PM. |

Mounted the steering servo up to the frame. Looks a lot better. Gonna make up some new links. Just barely misses the pumpkin. Last edited by howsyouraspen; 06-30-2011 at 10:34 PM. |

Here's a shot of the zero ackerman steering knuckles. Tore apart the front axle and put in the CVDs and the knuckles. Not sure if this angle is gonna work? Seems like it has some bump steer when the axle is about 1/2 droop. |

Thanks. Had really no problems at all with any of the drivetrain after switching everything to the steel gears and lockers. Probably only stripped a couple of the plastic tranny gears after months of hard use. I also just did the Traxxas driveshaft swap. Runs like a champ!

A couple small updates. Still waiting on stickers for this thing. And had to add a couple extra slots in the shock pistons. Rig was too light for these big shocks. Got the new holes drilled in the light bar. Mounted through the gussets on the roll cage. Might need some smaller body clips. After some trial and error, I had to remount my servo on the axle. Need to find a way to brace the frame a little bit to reduce the flex from the servo load. Plus a couple action shots! Still need to add my lights, finish up how to mount the body, and do some work on the interior. All for now. |
