What kind of binder do you use?

By binder im assuming you mean resin. Scrap prepreg carbon was used that was leftover from a UAV project... been a while since that project so I cant quite recall what the specs were.

This is still in the testing phase. We are currently experimenting with material thickness. First iteration was way too strong/stiff so we are subtracting layers now and may even try Kevlar for more flex.

Did you use a top hat section (roofing beam) for the mould?

Haha didn't think of that one. We used an aluminum tool.

Bulldog 09-21-2011 11:56 PM

Prifral, nice to see you're in SD. Great build so far. Awesome bends and attention to detail."thumbsup"

stelerzman 10-10-2011 04:54 PM

Amazing craftsmanship. Can we see some pic's of the home made tubing bender. I'm sure it's crude but functional."thumbsup""thumbsup""thumbsup""thumbsup ""thumbsup""thumbsup""thumbsup".

Yey finally getting some time to work on this. In my last post I mentioned that the scale had to be corrected because something happened to the drawing when I plotted it resulting in it being way too small.
http://gallery.me.com/prifral/100165...13225421560001

As you can see the new size(left drawing) is substantially bigger than the original(right drawing). Too bad cuz it took quite a bit of chromoly to figure out the bends on the first go - maybe Ill build an MRC based Mongo later using all that scrap:)
So tonight was spent on dialing in the difficult bends on the new size. Next step is to do the whole side profile in one continuous tube.

Hate to say it but the Wraith axles may be a better width for this build. I was really resistant to this idea in the beginning because these axles are just way too wide for my taste in crawling terrain - but I think I can learn to live w/it. As you can see the SCX10 axle is just way too narrow for the new Mongo drawing.

I finally just watched the movie. Can't wait to see this in in action! "thumbsup"

prifral 11-29-2011 03:38 PM

Thanks guys. I haven't seen the movie - maybe I should:)

Ensuring that these two hoops were exactly the same took a long time but I'm happy to say that they are absolutely symmetrical in every dimension"thumbsup"

Trimmed the hoops and prepped it for brazing. Also cut some smaller diameter stainless steel tubing to fit the ID of the 4130 for alignment and strength.

Brazed and de-fluxed
http://gallery.me.com/prifral/100165...13226242460001
Also should point out that I drilled a tiny hole in each hoop to prevent blowout during brazing.

To illustrate the precision of the bends - as you can see in the photo the tube is totally flat and its like this all the way around the braze joint

Nice progress pics of the cagework. Looks very clean and precise."thumbsup"

Looks good waiting to see this finished."thumbsup"

prifral 11-30-2011 09:17 PM

Finished up the side of the cab tonight. All the tubes used here were the stainless steel because they are thinner walled hence half the weight of the 4130. The SS is not as strong as the perimeter 4130 but I dont anticipate these members to take direct impact so it should be ok.

A close up of one to show the joints. My sandblaster is torn apart right now so I just did a quick spray of metal prep to clean it up a bit.
