Default *** Project Bad Math *** flatbed silverado restomod

well, i had always had an admiration for the silverado truggy and flatbed builds. i bookmarked two particular rigs and kept going back to them daydreaming and what not.

Nat's 1.9 Silverado Truggy

( photos from Tremelle, RCC )

exesivefire's 1.9 silverado truggy

( photos from exesivefire )

so needless to say when a chance came up in the wanted to trade section at RCC i was all over it. when i got it i had also received some trail spares and what not so this restomod should be fun.

this rig was certainly built by hand, and it appears to have been enjoyed nicely. some things don't line up as perfect as i would like to see them, so we will let my ADD rip on this one, and see what lands on the floor and what sticks.

taking a closer look you can see she is a bit caddywhompus, so i will be cutting the chassis out and scrapping it for a new one. not sure if i am going to use the rails i got in the trade, or if i am just going to use an scx10 chassis. either way the current setup will be changed and fit straight.

hopefully this is one i can finish, i got a few other little projects on hold due to the fact i really want a silverado more than i want a jeep.

visit often and help boost ambitions by adding a friendly reply.
thanks !!!

well right now i am straightening the bent tube work here and there and marking the chassis where i need to cut it. i am also cutting the tube work and moving some things around to make it line up to my liking. maybe i'll also add some simple bracing.

then it's on to cutting the chassis and adding some length to the rails for an unknown secret venture. maybe some boatsides.

I'll be watching, too. I've got a Landcruiser cab that I am building a flatbed for and my misadventures with the aluminum I've been using might force me to take the tubing route. Looking forward to seeing how you fix/mod the cage.

thanks for the boost guys. i quickly got to work separating the bed from the rest of the chassis. i figured if i'm going to straighten it out i better section it off and square up the thing in two or three parts then line those up to each other later. i cut and sleeved all the joints that would have any kind of stress on them. the rest i just cut and mated up.

also rather than cutting and splicing in new parts i just shortened the longer rails and made them equal to each other.
( or as best as i possibly could )

thanks for looking.

thanks, nope i think they are all on vacation after the last build. besides there was a big to do with the name of the rig. they wanted to call it FU, for forestry unit.

that's kinda what i was thinking too, although my jeep project isn't much like most heeps on here today.

well here is where the " bad math " name stems from.
it was a toss up between the two rigs i posted in my first post, nat's and exesivefire's. i couldn't decide what one i liked more, the four door cab or the two door. both had stunning appeal, so i guess it came down to what i had to work with.
whelp, looks like she will be a standard cab. i took a look at my cab and noticed something a little funky.

it had been cut off directly behind the door and the whole back cab was missing. no big deal, it matches up to the tube work anyways, i never noticed it before, so onward i go.
it had a back made of styrene with led's mounted but it is cracked and needs to be glues back in. well if i'm going that far i am going to add a window this time.

i at least wanna show off the dash and functioning steering wheel.

but something just wasn't adding up. i really really wanted Nat's rig when it came up for sale, in fact if she were around today she would tell you how much of a hound i was asking for that rig far before it even came up for sale at all. damn it i would love to have a quad cab. i had started to build one back last year, but got sidetracked into making a mall crawler.

so out came the knife and i started hacking up my cab.

check back often and thanks for the replies.

i got more

started the task of making a back for the cab. i figured out kinda quick that my styrene skills need a bit of brushing up lol.

got it all glued in and stuff. not too bad. my yota came out better than this one, but then again i got add.

it looked ok, but was missing something, so i googled a few pics and came up with the little pockets in the cab back, so i drew some crap up and winged it.

hang in there it hopefully gets better.

don't give me that much credit, i'm just faking it as i go.

didn't get a chance to tackle too much today, we had an open house for schools that my son might want to attend next year. i managed to sneak away a bit and get the panel glued in and sanded up. maybe needs a little filler... probably won't get any though. paint will cover it and the tubework is back there.
looks good from far.
i got the idea from 05 or 06 trucks, best pic i could find in ten seconds
my interpretation is rough, but if you don't study the real one how's mine look ?

till next update, stay outta the glue

I like the attention to detail. This is going to be good. Styrene work looks sweet. Keep up the good work.

So it's back to the 4 door then? I think I like that better than the shortened short cab. (2 Dr Silverados still have a little meat behind the door, and that shortened cab looked messed up.)

Cab back looks fine, once the tube and crap goes back on you won't be able to tell it's not the same as the 1:1.
