Default Sidehillers; roid raged willies, pocket poor project.

So I have been thinking of trying my hand at a scratch built scaler. I knew right away I would be building an old willies flatty. So I have been reading, reading, and searching not only here but on 1:1 sites also, looking for inspiration for this build.
About 3 months ago I came across a “blueprint” drawing of a cj3a with diminutions.

I managed to blow the drawing up on windows paint and print it on 11”X17” paper at work, which will be full RC size.

So now I have my “full size” drawing of the body that I am going to build out of styrene, but the question still remains. What exactly was I going to build? Back to the web I went. Then just this week I stumbled on this.

Now that I have my “blue print” of how to build the body (mostly LOL), and an image of what I kind of want in the end it was time to commit to this build.
So here I am I have a drawing of the body I want, an image of what I think I want and no idea how to do it. LMFAO
Just joking, well kind of I am going to build the frame, and body myself. Being a heavy duty mechanic I know I can get the chassis and suspension done. The body on the other hand will be a self-taught life lesson. The rest I will figure out as I go.
Now for the “pocket poor project” part, I am doing this as a side project with a homeless man’s budget. So I am not expecting this scaler to be done any time in the near future. I have a lot to learn with the styrene and such.
However I have picked up some ½ square stock and have a ax10 skid laying around so I hope to get a start on the chassis here in the near future.

Those shocks on the front of that Willys rub for sure under articulation! Sweet rig still, and a sick idea!

love the look of that flatty.... ill be keepin an eye on this build.... you going to box your frame or go C channel? I agree with redranger, you need to do those front shocks a little different, and She defiantly needs a winch out front too. Its a sick looking flatty, but from the looks of it, she's a pavement princess, show queen, So if your gonna run her hard there looks like a few design changes could be needed. But that's the best part.... putting your own spin on it Have fun with it, cant wait to see some progress

I also noticed the shocks, but like Rockridge says that's the fun of this making it my own.

Thanks Rockridge. I am doing a C channel frame.
I have many ideas to make this my own.

Now to bounce some ideas off you guys. I am using a ax10 skid and Not sure if I should center it in the frame or slide it back a bit like a true 1:1?

Or

Not quite sure if I am going to run leaf springs or just 4 link it yet.

Well it was a slow day in the shop on Sunday so I took advantage of it. Lol

It turned out damnear better then I drew it. Very happy with it, and hoping I can get my holes for skid and cross members laid out so I can drill them and cut this thing in half.

However I am still trying to figure out where to mount the skid. I am Thinking centered that way I am keeping as much Weight as I can forward.

Well you got to love break up in the oil patch. Had a another slow day at work.
Got the holes drilled for the skid, bumpers, and cross members. And got the frame cut in half.

Now I need to find some 7/16" square stock for cross members, and start looking at bumpers and sliders.

Thanks redranger. I am supper stoked about this build. Although it will take a bit with the body and all. I am really looking forward to learning about styrene.

Nice. Styrene is your friend. There's some great how-to's all over this site, you'll be sure to find some answers to your impending questions. Good luck!
