Griz's Scale Adventure Trail Rigs/G6 Rides This build was actually started a year ago when I bought an Axial SCX10 Rubicon kit for my son. It turned out that he really liked my PSC Wraith better so I told him we could trade if he helped me finish building the Jeep. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps554956ef.jpg http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psc51965f1.jpg The plans for this rig have been all over the place and I couldn't really find a direction. I wanted to build a more simple scale rig with less fabrication that I could just take out and enjoy, that much I knew. Then life happened again and this rig sat on the workbench for a while. A few weeks ago Lil Griz and I entered our first Scale Adventure event put on by The Crawl Space here in Colorado. Lil Griz enjoyed it so much that we immediately made plans to attend the next ones and I finally had a good reason to get back to working on rigs; father son time! http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psc9eaae53.jpg I then planned to build this into a 2.2 or a very large tire 1.9 as a replacement for Guido, but then while talking to a good friend on a camping trip he asked if he and his son could go with us to the next Scale Adventure. They have box stock C/R and RTR SCX10 Jeeps so in the interest of us all running as a group I decided to turn this and the PSC Wraith back into 1.9 rigs. I had come up with a theme for the build but still kept second guessing it: should I build a trail rig, a KOH style race rig, Jeepspeed, or what? I just couldn't decide. Then the inspiration hit me as I came across pictures of Trump1's "Bad Ass" G6 SCX build. I loved the scale look he achieved with a bit of custom fabrication without going over the top and building a full concourse custom rig. Exactly what I was after and I liked the trail rig theme with old school looks. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps4f92db21.jpg The name for this build will be "Dutch". I came up with this last year when I decided to name it after the iconic character in one of my favorite movies, Predator. This is why there will be some references to firepower in this build. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps23a30160.jpg I decided that this rig would be an adventure rig; seemed fitting since the Scale Adventure run had brought this back to life. This rig will be a hardcore trail rig, but one that is ready for long-term travel and adventure (not short rock crawling trips) to keep with the G6 format that this rig is meant to run. There will also be just a touch of Zombie preparedness thrown in as well. Some people may feel the zombie thing is played out, but being prepared is never a bad thing and having firepower on board is always a good thing. Early on when I came up with the name and the hunting theme the build was going to have a more subdued, military/hunting look. Since this is the 10th year anniversary of RCC I decided to honor that with more of a tribute to the colors. I ordered a wrap from www.freqeskinz.com. I have been working with vinyl wrap alot lately, camoing my guns, iPods, sunglasses, paintball gun, and even the trim on the wife's Tahoe; so I felt it was time to try one of Neal's wraps. I really liked the look and the colors in the "Shot Flames Neon Green" design. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps8de6e6f2.jpg These rigs are the main 1:1 inspiration for this build, but I don't plan to copy either of them. I like the elements like the wide stance and big tires.: Cain http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psbacd4b0f.jpg I like some elements of the front bumper but not the long front hoop. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psc507b502.jpg Now that I have good direction I have been working hard on this for a couple weeks now and I'm loving how it is coming together so far. |
re: "Dutch" Griz's Scale Adventure Trail Rig/G6 Ride I won a Hand Brothers front and rear CMS kit at NWSC 2012 so I wanted to make use of the front one and show how it works on the Rubicon. That is a bit of a moot point now since the kit is discontinued but it is a great kit and works perfect. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps9ab08e93.jpg The servo mount required trimming off one leg of the front crossmember and that's it. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps01c83212.jpg The truss bolted right on and all the parts needed were included with either the kit or in the Axial spares. I did end up using a couple shock pistons from the spares to space the upper link a bit further from the frame. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps972a67ac.jpg The geometry of of the kit is spot on and there is no bump steer at all. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps18d424f3.jpg |
re: "Dutch" Griz's Scale Adventure Trail Rig/G6 Ride Oh man Griz can't wait to see what you come up with. I sold Mongo years ago and just recently picked up a Rubicon kit to build and run with my daughters. |
re: "Dutch" Griz's Scale Adventure Trail Rig/G6 Ride I love the G6 builds. I had the same inspiration you did Griz. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...c5d74053ce.jpg |

Dutch won't be a concourse rig like Guido but you know me, I won't be able to settle for just a kit build. :ror: My friend picked up an RTR because his kid drives the wheels off his SCX and had the same thought as me; quality fun time with the kids. "thumbsup" So get yours going and get out there with the daughters. |

I knew I was going to be running some large tires so I decided to extend the wheelbase. Rather than just making some custom links I thought I'd show how to accomplish a wheelbase stretch with off the shelf parts. First thing I did was replace the Axial lower link rod ends with Traxxas #2742 rod ends (Traxxas #1942 set). The traxxas rod ends are just a bit longer and give you a perfect stretch for this body. It doesn't seem like much, but it makes a noticable difference. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps74dcc04f.jpg Here is the difference on a lower link. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps65109592.jpg For rear upper links I went with the Traxxas 5138 T-Maxx turnbuckles. These were a mainstay for links in the old days and I still have lots of them laying around. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps7ff1a6f6.jpg http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...pse33ff365.jpg http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps5d6236da.jpg Here is a comparison between the original rear tire position and the extended. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps2cc46c40.jpg http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...pse01fd251.jpg This mod pushed the rear axle back by about 0.4 (3/8 ) inches. You can see in the pics that I also mounted my fender flares higher and further back than stock. I did this in preparation for the big tires and wheelbase stretch. Even though I now plan to run tires about the same size as stock, the wb stretch and flare repositioning still works and changes up the look a bit. I did the front stretch as well but it did not work out. I simply could not get the panhard bar to stop hitting the Hand Bros truss. If you have an axle mounted servo then this much stretch will work. The front did get a bit of a stretch but I still need to get new pictures of the setup. |
re: "Dutch" Griz's Scale Adventure Trail Rig/G6 Ride 10 Years of RCC Tribute Build Try some Jato rod ends and see what happens. |
re: "Dutch" Griz's Scale Adventure Trail Rig/G6 Ride 10 Years of RCC Tribute Build Quote:
That would stretch the wb way more than I want anyway. |
re: "Dutch" Griz's Scale Adventure Trail Rig/G6 Ride 10 Years of RCC Tribute Build Emaxx and Revo turnbuckles are still great to use, I just rebuilt an SCX10 using nothing but the parts bin of links! |
re: "Dutch" Griz's Scale Adventure Trail Rig/G6 Ride 10 Years of RCC Tribute Build Quote:
That's how I threw together the Wraith. Just opened up the link parts bin and pulled out some Revo pushrods. I was stoked when I put the Maxx turnbuckles in this one and they just needed a little bit of adjustment. |
re: "Dutch" Griz's Scale Adventure Trail Rig/G6 Ride 10 Years of RCC Tribute Build Late last week I finished up the floorboards, which I made from 0.060" thick angle aluminum. Also got the firewall and inner fenders finished up out of styrene. The battery mounts to the back side of the firewall. Didn't really like the stock sliders but wanted some kind of slider to protect the body and keep it in place. So this weekend I built some new sliders. I cut up a 1/2" square tube of steel to make two L-brackets. Then welded some 1/8" steel rod to it to jazz them up a bit. They bolt to the floorboards with 3x M2 button head screws. I'm really happy with how they turned out. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psa0cf164d.jpg http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps307bdc6b.jpg http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps95520957.jpg http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps659d480f.jpg |

re: "Dutch" Griz's Scale Adventure Trail Rig/G6 Ride 10 Years of RCC Tribute Build While the Jeep was looking good, between the slight wb stretch up front and the tire size there was going to be interference with the grill at full lock turn and articulation. My original plan was to do a narrow XR10 mod to the front axle but when I put the wide AXR10 axle under the Wraith I thought it looked good so I decided to go full width. I decided to try out the RC Bros Burly Tubes for this install. I really liked the idea of having splines on the tubes so I thought I give these a shot. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psdd9a4b0d.jpg Install was super easy. Not that the mods for Beef Tubes are hard; but the Burly Tubes were plug and play. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps6877d090.jpg http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps69fed4d8.jpg I like to sand down the sharp edges on the housing. I feel it gives a bit more realism. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps4cea47cb.jpg The other nice feature from RC Bros are these super sano spacers that look nice and clean. After taking all the pics I realized that the spacers were installed backwards but I didn't want to redo all the pics. They are installed correctly now. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps32e30d3a.jpg I used a drill bit to make sure all the holes were lined up. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps06dbda4d.jpg Then a quick tap. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps52cd7401.jpg The plastic Axial Chubs are a really tight fit, you can see how the tubes shaved off some material. After I cleaned out the shavings the Chubs were able to fully seat. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps4cea47cb.jpg The Vanquish Chubs go on smooth as buttah and have no slop. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps718bd3e2.jpg As with either tube option, drilling the holes for the knuckle screws is the worst part. I never can seem to get them in exactly the right spot, but then again I never change the clocking once I get them installed so it's not that big of a deal if they are off a bit. As you can see, my holes are a bit off but a bit of clearancing took care of that. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psf0558e44.jpg I stuffed a piece of paper towel in the tube so chips wouldn't get on the ring gear and I wouldn't have to remove the tubes to clean the chips out. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psd7c5b1ef.jpg I couldn't be happier with the RC Bros Burly tubes. I love how you leave the plastic in the housing so that the tubes are held in firmly and the screws only keep the tube from rotating. I love the splined ends and they are very well machined. I also like how the Chub screw only has to hold the Chub in place on the tube and not stop rotation. The axle and Chub screws on Guido's Beef Tubes are always coming loose. I have high hopes that the Burly Tubes will not have that problem. I will let you all know soon enough. I plan to spend the money on Burly Tubes again for sure. "thumbsup" Great product guys. Before the Burly Tubes with Vanquish .350 hubs and OMF beadlocks: http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps34ea1759.jpg The width with Vanquish .350 hubs and OMF wheels turned out to be a bit too much. I ordered some .225 hubs to see if that fixes it: http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psd3520010.jpg The width in the rear with the Vanquish .725 hubs and OMF beadlocks was perfect. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps14aeaba6.jpg |

I need to get caught up on updates this week. Two weekends ago I finished up the firewall, floorboards, and winch mounting. Here you can see the floorboards and firewall. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psfa7b80ff.jpg Firewall and battery mount. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psad5d9d60.jpg Inner fenders will also help brace the firewall. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps91ec85fe.jpg Here is the winch mounting plate. It is secured to the crossmember and also captured by the CMS. I put a longer horn on the servo and the screw threads from attaching the draglink were catching on the bottom of the frame. By spacing the servo down with the 0.060" steel plate that issue was fixed. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psbfcf0d82.jpg Winch servo mounting. The servo sits on the 0.125" aluminum plate to give clearance for the drum. I was going to just cut a relief hole for the drum but then realized that the spacer would give me a place to thread one of the crossmember screws into, so it worked out good this way. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psba7d55fc.jpg Guide tube was made from 0.188" aluminum tube. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psfc92255e.jpg The 3Racing winch is simply for decoration. I have burned up 2 motors in this winch alone so I don't trust them to last. The servo winch will give me more reliability, more speed, and more power. I don't want to lose my winch in the middle of a 200 gate course. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps2c983b68.jpg |
re: "Dutch" Griz's Scale Adventure Trail Rig/G6 Ride 10 Years of RCC Tribute Build Then the chassis was blown apart for paint. I had a set of Locked Up 1.9 wheels so I painted them as well. The paint I am using is from Eastwood. It is a spray paint with a hardener in it so the finish should be just as tough as any automotive paint. I first tried this paint on my RM250 frame this year and I am extremely happy with the durability. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psdcbb17e3.jpg http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psafba8b0b.jpg Word of advice, if you use this paint don't treat it like a regular spray paint. The chemicals in this stuff are much worse so you must use a real respirator and good ventilation. It's also $25.00 per can and only good for 48 hours after you activate the hardener so plan ahead. I feel that the benefits of a true 2 part paint in the convenience of a spray can are worth it though. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps2d8b5d13.jpg Here is my bike going back together after painting the frame. I have been riding several times this year and the paint is holding up amazingly well to the abuse. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps22d85c3e.jpg |
re: "Dutch" Griz's Scale Adventure Trail Rig/G6 Ride 10 Years of RCC Tribute Build After a couple days of cure time for the paint I was ready to assemble the chassis again. Luckily I had some help show up Thursday to get this together. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psee5084b2.jpg They worked quick and had it back to a roller in no time. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps73d39452.jpg I needed to build a track bar and a new drag link because of the XR10 axle. I built the new track bar out of 0.188" stainless steel tube while the guys built the drag link. To save time I just wanted the drag link made from 0.188" aluminum tube because all you have to do is cut to length and run a 6-32 tap into the end. However, since the K&S aluminum tube isn't the strongest stuff I had them make a spare; just in case. While I love their enthusiasm; I really need to get them some power tools. :ror: http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps6e9ac7cc.jpg Finished pieces next to the ones I used for mockup. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psdc12acde.jpg "Let's get these installed" http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps29a0e870.jpg Perfect! The 0.188" tube looks more scale than the 6mm Axial tube. Even though the drag link is longer than the track bar, there is no noticeable bump steer. The tie rod is a spare I had built for Guido so I just used it to save some time. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psaa12f81d.jpg |
re: "Dutch" Griz's Scale Adventure Trail Rig/G6 Ride 10 Years of RCC Tribute Build More parts came in on Friday. I sourced DSPro for the cool ammo cans and some gas can holders. Not pictured is the "down and dirty" winch hook. I wanted to buy the Nato cans also but since I need four I held off for now. I'll pick them up next month. I will make my own rack to mount the gas cans to the tire carrier. DSPro makes some great quality stuff. Top notch vendor that Ryan! "thumbsup" http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps17868072.jpg My RPP order came in as well. Stickers, sleeping bags, the Gear Head Rubicon roof rack, scale bolts and Vanquish hubs for the Locked Up wheels that go on Short Change, some Gear Head tow rope hooks, RPM blower, and some gas cans. The Hot Racing cans were a lot cheaper than the DSPro cans so I bought them for now. I will give them to my son once I get the Nato cans from DSPro. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psddfa14a2.jpg |
re: I was going to buy a new Hitec 7955 servo for the winch but since I bought another set of wheels I decided to use a servo I had laying around in the parts bin. I found this Hitec 5997TG servo and figured that it would make for a decent winch. Compared to the 5645 in the bin this was a good option. Here are some specs for comparison. All specs are @ 6.0V because that's what the HeyOk controller is rated for and that's what I run my electronics off of anyway. I prefer to use the lower voltage because I feel it keeps the servos more reliable; and reliability is important to me for TTC and G6 type events. HS-7955TG - 250 in-oz and .14 sec/60 degree. HSC-5997TG - 333 in-oz and .15 sec/60 degree HS-5645MG - 168 in-oz and .18 sec/60 degree A HeyOk controller should eliminate the usual creep and make this a good solid winch. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psb61d745c.jpg For this install I had to trim off some plastic where the trim pot was in order for the controller to fit. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps5fed6751.jpg Perfect fit now. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps125672b3.jpg Wires soldered. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psb28b60aa.jpg All buttoned up. The price of the HeyOk controller is well worth the time saved soldering on resistors to replace the pot and messing around with trim. It's really a simple install. It took longer to get the control board desoldered from the motor than to install the HeyOk controller. "thumbsup" http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psbda23f34.jpg Found a bobbin to use for a drum. Some aluminum mounts and these way cool RCBros clamps will make the mounting bombproof. Some black Permatex RTV around the wires and this sucker is waterproof. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps3531d3f5.jpg |
re: "Dutch" Griz's Scale Adventure Trail Rig/G6 Ride 10 Years of RCC Tribute Build A couple packages showed up Monday from Holmes Hobbies and Vanquish. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps1adea441.jpg The new Vanquish 8 Hole Shooters are simply badass. I absolutely love these wheels!!! "thumbsup" I don't have time to waterproof the MMP and "offspec" Trailmaster BL motor before this weekend so I will just install the Trailmaster BL and MMP borrowed from Guido for now. "Let's get that motor installed" http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps9e6a1782.jpg http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psf0f16e52.jpg http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...psa5f6f7dd.jpg The Freqeskinz wrap has been coming along nicely. I have been working on it slowly to try and get it as perfect as I can. There are still some small air bubbles and bumps from dirt that somehow got under the wrap, but it's really turning out just as nice as any of my paint jobs with about the same amount of work. Plus there is no way I could have replicated this graphic in paint. Nice product for sure!!! My only wish would be that the black and grey were flat instead of glossy. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps53a98033.jpg |
