Default 2017 Jeep YJ on links just for fun, class whatever, I like no comps

A loooong time ago, I sold my Jeep YJ and I regret ever since, even more because it was sold to a guy that turned out to be an a-hole... Nevermind...

It was my favourite build: chassis designed by me, laser cut, opening hood, doors and trunk, interior, roll cage, yotas on leafs under the axle, lights, etc...

This was it:

Yeh.. I now get to the conclusion that you should not sell the builds that mean a lot to you...

So, About a year ago I decided to build another YJ. For that, I started gathering parts. Again, designed by me and laser cut chassis, cms, leaf springs, interior, lights, etc... But this time I chose the MST CMX because the axles fitted much better than the Yotas!

Lets start by u-bolts and the pieces (what do you call that?) that hold the leafs on the axle! The pieces were laser cut and the u-bolts were made by my good friend cooperworks and came out awesome! Oh! And I used LURC hardware on the axles! It looks a lot better!

Then the chassis. I wanted it to be wider at the back to have a drop bed so it had a lot of revisions before it was cut. With cms of course!

Here, durabilty test!

But, when I placed the body on the chassis, I didnīt like it... Too high and a bit short wheelbase, so back to the drawing board for the V2 of the chassis!

Meanwhile, Sam and Bishop took care of body.

A lot of sanding in the horizon...

I tried making my own hinges but they looked like crap so...

Used Sketchup and draw mine! Printed by shapeways.

And some rear view mirrors while I was at it! A bit small the mirror part, but, I can live with that!

V2 chassis.

V2 on the left, V1 on the right. V2 had the hanger points higher in the chassis and allowed for some wheelbase adjustment.

Transmission mount.

Transmission i a RCModelex one. Same as an HPI but with a 5mm output shaft.

Screws and veeeeeery close!

Plate for the servo.

Things are very tight in here!!

The axle mounted servo was a no go for me, so I made some mounts out of cutting board and moved it to the chassis! Later the mounts will be replaced by a printed part.

Drill a 3mm hole on the second 2mm hole to make it more robust

Also made the panhard mount out of cuting board.

To make room for the body, the servo is touching the motor.

Oh! I also drew hinges for the back door and this front bumper:

Forgot to mention the front axle was pushed forward using the 5mm spacers that come with the kit to make longer links.

Now, next time I have time for this, will be sand the inside corners of the back and start a floor panel!

More to come! Soon, I hope!

Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed it!

Flip the u bolts with hardware on top of the axle. Much less hang up potential.

Huummm... No!

I was expecting to have more done but since monday I'm struggling with a tonsillitis... Throat hurts, clogged and/or runny nose, clogged ears, body aches and shivers, fever... You name it...

This pics are from sunday.

It was only when I put the body in the direct sunlight that I realized the mess the rear was... So more putty and sanding in the future...

Taking care of the mold lines at the front.

Tools of the trade.

Started using CAD for the interior.

CAD, get it ? Carboard Aided Design? Yeah? Old joke? Ok...

This pics are from yesterday. Was expecting to do more after dinner but I was to sick...

Surprisingly, everything fitted well! Just need to open up a bit more the hole for the transfer case

Once again, thanks for watching!

Thanks!

Slow progress but progress non the less...

The transfer case and transmission are covered. Took me almost 3 hours to make the transmission cover... Jeeesus...

Started on a single dash.

Then, the rear gate hinges arrived!

So did the bumper!

Baaammm!

I think it looks good and has a decent aproach angle!

Then again, my friend cooperworks stepped in and offered my some spacers for the rear shock towers. They look good and fit nicely!

He also arranged to print this body mounts I designed without taking care for measurements and this was the result (sad trombone sounds):

No problem! Turned them around! And now, with some rubber bushings they will look a lot better!

Also took care of those fake turning indicators on the front. They wont have light but this way looks a lot better!

The rear wheel wells are almost done and I think they look nice!

Again, thanks for watching!

It's all in the details and this build has them, Never even thought of replacing the hinges or removing the bonnet like that. Awesome work

Wow! Thank you very much!

Some more progress was acheived this afternoon!

Look what came in the mail! A rear bumper for rear bumping! Cool!!

Installed in place.

With a bit of persuasion (with things like a red hot bit of iron...), the bumper allowed for the body to sit in place! Me and my damn measurements...

Installing the rear gate hinges.

With proper scale hardware!

Done! Closed!

Folded down!

They are straight! Sort of...

Rear wheel wells are done!

Now to mount the body, I used screws (duh...) and those rubber thingies that usually come with the steering servos.

"Welding" the body mounts in place!

After this I decided to stop for today, but turned back to the garage to make holes in the dashboard... I shouldnīt have turned back to the garage...

Sh!t...

I'm trying to fix this...

Again, thanks for watching!

I havenīt posted any updates in a long time, because life happens, so the progress is slow but little by little, somthing is done! Here is an update!!

Steering column sculpted from layers of pvc.

A winch for winching in those climbs where you need a winch for winching!

Steel cable was immediately replaced for Dyneema rope, and the motor will probably be replaced for one with more torque.

It came with a nice red hook!

Hello! What do wee have here? They will be back-lit!

Steering column with wheel and sticks.

The dash was to low so it was rotated upward after the photo.

Much better!

In place.

Finally, some paint!

Hinges painted!

As well as my hand!!

When I started to lay the electronics, temporarily, I stumbled in a problem; there was no space at the front for a batterie. This was the solution, a "wooden" box to cover the batterie. It's not the solution that I wanted but it's the one possible!

What a nice rats nets! Godd thing is everything works!

Back to Sam and Bishop garage, we took some protective measures!

Scale hardware! (The intention is to replace every screw with scale hardware.)

Superlift steering stabilizer. Stickers missing, will be applied when the project is done.

Ribbing on the back door to make it easy to slide stuff around!

Rear bumper detail. (That is the reason for the recesses.)

Excuse me the blurry photo...

Installing disc brakes on all four corner

Finally with the right rims!

Very nice! I wish I had the patience for details like that....

and the restraint to not thrash everything I build. No control of my driving habits.

Thank you! The laser cut chassis is on the shelf but not forgotten! I intend to get back to it in the future!

Some more details!

Pedals for "pedaling"!

Muffler is in place!

Aswell as the exhaust tip!

Only missing the other parts of the exhaust system!

Well... After 5 months with no updates, here are some news!

Exhaust system secured in place!

A detail that nobody cares about...

Then, I made this crap...

Had to fix it...

Almost there...

Almost almost there...

With scale bolts, naturally!

Home made license plates, with soda can tin, self-adhesive paper and layers of plastic 70 (conformal coating).

Once again, scale bolts.

The start of a rear view mirror.

Windshield is on! No more bug eating! Have to make wipers...

Than, this detail was upsetting me... Painted wouldn't look good...

Off it goes!

It will be replaced with proper material!

Another detail bugging me...

Start of a snorkel. 3 layers of plastic and then corners rounded by hand.

Huummm... Don't like it...

That's better!

Mounted with... Scale bolts! (And a strip of soda can tin!)

The CB antenna. Made with brass and layers of thermal shrink wrap. The base came from an electronic device of some sort. It was from the battery compartment.

90% of the crews were already replaced.

After hours of masking, ready for paint!

I should have used matte black instead of satin, it's a bit too shiny but oh well!

This was not the first solution for the snorkel, but I think it won't look to bad in the end! It was sanded after the photos, just needs paint now! It will be only 5 more months till the next update!
