Default Danza’s Origin

Well this last week has been a blast, this is the first full blown kit that I’ve done and it was a pleasure. I’ll spare the building process pics as these all look similar undressed.

Overall build impressions: impressed. Outside of the bearing carrier issue which was resolved extraordinarily quickly everything else went together perfectly. I didn’t have any issues with the instructions and the quality of every piece was great. The body itself is exceptional, I’m almost not wanting to crawl with this one but I’ll get another for shelf queening. The most challenging part was mounting the tires to the plastic bead locks, which themselves were the most disappointing part. But I wasn’t planning on keeping them stock and the ssd’s were much easier to mount the tires on.

I’m looking forward to getting it out on the rocks. The suspension is very soft, I’m running a light oil, flexing well. The stock tires are super sticky, I’m using proline foams with them. Will give them a shot but also have some predator hyrax on standby.

Specs:
Mamba x
HH puller pro 2700kv
Protek 150T (this thing rocks so far)
Flysky GT5
SSD Contenders w/stock tires and proline foams

Lights on the way. Also, kudos to VP for including the rcc decal!

I don't like those wheels. But for some reason they are perfect on this truck and they look great! Nice job!

Looks good Danza! It is an awesome kit. I'm glad you mentioned the RCC decal. I forgot to add it mine.

Thanks dudes! This is the first time I’ve used the tamiya flat clear on the outside and I think it came out great. I was able to salvage the window masks and use them on the outside again.

Also used frog tape this time and love that stuff. Much better than the scorch blue and the tamiya masking tape IMO.

That's booful! I would've never chosen arctic white as a primary color but it looks surprisingly good! The matte made it.

Those wheels are right on the $.

Much better than the half blown kits you've done.

Wired up some headlights and taillights from lighthouse LEDs. The headlights can run up to 15v but for now they are with the rest of the electronics at 7.4v.

Interior this weekend then time to scratch it up.

Interior painted and in the truck. I wanted a dark red leather and used a combination of tamiya red, black backing, smoke, and matte clear to get here. The color is almost exactly what I had in mind thankfully.

Tough to get pics that show the interior well but here are a few

Got the rig out for the first time and it did great! I had high expectations and this truck met all of them easily. I had a couple of flips while learning its limits but I think I can improve there with some suspension tweaking and finding a way to add a little bit of weight up front.

This rock wall is a good 10-12 feet high and is one of the most challenging ones to get up out here. I was recording and driving at the same time so pardon the shotty camera work and not the prettiest wheeling.

This was with a basically stock truck, stock tires but with Proline foams.

Taking it out again Sunday with predator hyrax rubber to see how it compares.

Got out again with hyrax rubber, did very well again but I think I may stick to the vanquish tires till I get new foams for the hyrax.

I want to under drive the rear or overdrive the front, I emailed vp but they said no currently available gears would achieve this. I want to add a little weight to the front too, will have to see what options are out there.

Here’s a clip and a couple pics from the evening crawl and the rock wall.

I took a leap and chopped the top and added the knights customs roll cage. Fashioned a temporary mount from some spare lexan I had around but the rear will sit better once the knights customs rear mount shows up form shapeways.

Also added the knights customs “stock” grill which is the same style as the stock one but without the vanquish logo piece. I painted the radiator behind it chrome for a little pop.

Some scale bits were thrown in, this isn’t a work truck so I went with the keg, solo cup, cooler, and boom box all from scale by chris. Driver is Nikki Bella, well half of her. Her shirt says Team Bella, and my daughter goes by Bella so it was a no brainer.

I installed the 1” vanquish rigid light bar which runs off the 3s battery, this pup is bright for how smal it is!

I added the Hot Racing overdrive gears for the scx10ii. These fit on the stock spool but only use 3 screws instead of 6. It is a mild overdrive with a 27t and 8t vs the stock 30 and 8. The pitch of the HR gears are different than stock so you must use the HR ring and pinion gears together. Also installed but not pictured are dual stage proline foams to keep the hyrax predator sidewalls upright and some beef patty hexs up front for a little extra weight.

So I had quite the bad luck over the weekend and what I would normally consider a routine roll over has turned into a wildly bent frame.

This happened on an incline that was steep but not very tall, the truck happened to roll with the impact happening right on the corner of the back bumper. One roll and I notice something is very wrong, take a closer look and I see the chassis is bent right by the belly of the frame rail.

On one of the larger VS4-10 Facebook groups there were others that had the frames bend from impacts where it wouldn’t be expected from. The chassis brace flexed and didn’t seem to do much in this case. I emailed VP on Sunday and am waiting to hear back from them on whether or not it will be warrantied. Will update when I hear from them.

For anyone else driving these I strongly recommend ditching the stock bumpers, they are very stiff and won’t flex or distribute impacts very well. Find something plastic or that will flex until it is figured out how to reimforce the frame rails.

Man, that's a huge drag!

Maybe some reinforcement strips with an "L" cross-section at the bend points would prevent it in the future?

(of course, a "C" cross-section boxing it in from the other side would be best, but quite hard to DIY in such a small size...)

I'll confess that the bumpers (while nicely machined) have been the aspect of the Origin kit that I liked the least, they look much too modern and featureless for such a rig.

Welded tubes are more my liking, but would still transmit the impact...

I'd go for beefing up the chassis as much as possible, myself - plastic bumpers on the thing would be a cryin' shame!
