| TRUGGY ??? first build
well after being on pirate 4x4 and seeing a few of these i got the bug really bad... but im not into the whole buying and playing with thing.... so after looking on here i have seen alot of awsome things, but still dont know whats the best of the best and what will work if your on a budget.... so i used the ford body cuase it was the only thing i had and i didnt want to buy something... i used steel for the cage, it weighs a little less than 2 pounds... is that heavy??? last thing, would it be cheaper to buy the ax 10 and use parts off it ( local hobby guy told me to ??? ) or, what makes sense to me, is piece it together off ebay, or here, i cant see the classified s thought... so i kniow im another newbie, but any and all help or tricks would be greatly appreciated.... thanks... |

Just keep looking in the f/s section & you should find a good deal on parts. You can also buy a star & post a want ad |

I think you need 20 post before you can see the classifieds. If you buy the ax-10, you would have darn near everything to start crawling. Minus the radio, motor, battery, and servo. Last edited by Heinakin; 10-05-2008 at 04:25 PM. |

you said yours ways about 2 pounds i think with 87T spur and 20T pinion and like a 27 turn motor you should be alright cuz thats what my friend ran on his scale crawler and it wayed like 9 pounds and these gears are pretty strong |

I think allot of times a guy is better off buying a kit. There's allot of hardware and parts in the kit you can use or build parts out of. I'd bet by the time your finished,it'll be close to 10 pounds. Not bad for a scaler. Most comp rigs are roughly 4-6 pounds. Scalers have allot more junk on them,so they can get a bit porky. The stock Axial drive train will hold up to that fairly well. Might look into the CDW chromoly outputs for the tranny. Could always upgrade that later. I'd look into a Castle Sidewinder ESC or a Tekin FXR ESC. A 45t motor on stock gearing with either 8 2/3a cells or a 3 cell lipo would be a good powerplant to run.

good to know good to know...thanks... yeah thats what i figured is i would end up just buying the ax10 then usin it for a few days then use the running gear on the frame i built... hopefully i can make it work... i just sorta winged the frame width, knowing that i could mod i later if i had to... built to modify... plans, finish frame tomarrow and paint it... then some body work... and wait for the funds top buy the ax 10... UNLESS SOMONE KNOWS OF A GOOD DEAL ON A USED ONE?????? BEAT OR NOT... |

I love the notes to yourself on the body For this build you are better off getting a full rig used for parts. Once you have a couple of builds you will be able to piece things together easily but start with a kit or a used roller. |

Since you already have a chassis, pick up a tranny and a set of axles. Trannies run about $40, axles at my LHS $35 each. Then read the forum for what people are running and buy the rest. The only real benefit to buying the whole kit would be the hardware, but $90 for nuts & bolts is a little steep. The only issue I see with the frame is lack of servo clearence. Since the servo is mounted on the axle, frame width is important. If you run into a problem mount the steering servo on the frame for that scale effect. Though the servo may fit between the rails, it's hard to tell.
