| "El Rolo" Jr.
I was super inspired by the build thread over on Pirate of "El Rolo" and really liked the way the rig turned out. I contacted the owner and asked if it would be cool if I made a small replica of his rig and he gave me the . I decided when I started planning the build that I wanted to be as accurate as possible as opposed to just getting the basic look of his tube work. I have never made a tube frame before this project. I planned on detailing the build from the frame rails on but it just didn't happen the way I wanted it to. Here is what I already have or plan on getting for the build: AX10 Axles and Tranny Rooster Crawler Integy 55t (thinking about going with a 35t for a little more speed though) MIP C-Drives Aluminum Knuckles Rear lockout CR-01 wheels that I was/am planning on using to match his as best I can. I will need wideners to use these though. Flatirons for mockup, I wanted to run Rock Stompers because he's going to run Sticky Iroks soon but the 2.2's are just too tall. (5.5") I have some 1.9 rock stompers and they look too small so. I may end up going with some CR-01 tires too since they are same height as flat irons. Wheelbase is 13" The owner of "El Rolo" provided a ton of pictures and has been more than helpful in answering specific questions about the rig. EDIT: The wheelbase is now 12". I went ahead with the CR-01's and Flat Irons w 3/4" wideners. First a couple of pics of El Rolo. Last edited by Leavnya; 11-08-2008 at 05:09 PM. |

I used the HPI Jeep body as a donor for the hood. The hood was too long and wide the way it was so I took about an inch out on the middle and bobbed the back a couple of inches. Seamed everything up and put it back together with E-6000. I've never done any Lexan bodywork like this so I'm pretty happy the way it came out so far. I plan to paint it inside and out. |

Got a little more done last night. I think the rear axle could stand to come in just a hair with either wheelbase. Give me your opinion. 13" WB with Widelocks and Rock Stompers. (1.9's) 13" WB with CR-01 Wheels and Flat Irons. Again, I would definately need some wideners to run these wheels. (2.2's) 12.5" WB Flex shots Brazed some more nuts and started on the body panels using aluminum. Let me know what you guys think about the wheel/tire size combos. Which looks more like the real rig to you? I would paint the widelocks if I end up using them. any other questions/concerns you see please shoot em this way. Thanks for checking it out. |

Ok, 1.9's it is. What do you guys think about the rear axle placement as it sits? Does it need to come forward any or is it fine where it sits? |

| From the pic of the 1:1 it looks as though you need to go forward a little but it's probly fine where it's at. Not sure how it would effect your suspension. Keep it up.

nah man, 1.9's look scale on your build. I woould go with the largest 1.9 available though. It's coming along nicely!

Leave the rear axle where it's at.

If you want it exact, you should move the axle forward so that the middle of the wheel is right under that point on the bottom of the chassis, and lower the crawler half an inch. As for wheels, i'd say use the 1.9 tires you have on it, and use those black wheels, not the red ones. Just my suggestions.

It's been a while since I've updated. All of the aluminum panels are done, the interior is done the electronics are done. I still have to install the body panels and the small details. I moved the axle in to where it looks pretty close to the real rig (12" wheelbase). Went with the CR-01's and Flatirons with 3/4" wideners. Here's where it's at now. BTW, I hate brazing nuts... Great work. I like the current wheel/tire setup. Looks scale to 1:1, other than the tire width. But I do like the look of the flat irons. The 1:1 owner should be proud of your work. That rig looks sweet murdered out. |
