Default Chevy Build

Well after stumbling on this site a few months ago and seeing some of the awesome projects going on I had to go and buy a TLT kit to start my first project.

I love the look of the old chevy trucks so i am using a parma clod body.

here's a picture of the frame and what i have of the cage so far.

I'm hoping to get a ride into town tomorrow to get some brazing rod (don't get my license for another 2 months:-( )

The frame rails are made of 16 guage steel, i'm not sure if they'll be strong enough or not, i'll see when i get the rest of the crossmembers in and the cage done.

If you're going to stick with that steel you definately need some more bracing. Looking good so far though. Makes me miss my clod a little. Not much but a little.

sweet looking first time build, i'd make the frame rails a little thicker. can't wait to see it in a none scotch taped form!

BTW, good to see another cheesehead online!

Nice start to your build. You could probably get some scrap aluminum or thicker metal free to make your rails out of just ask around for some scrap at about the size you need.

Colquitt-I'll help you out. I love that song.

Just the good ol' boys,
Never meanin' no harm,
Beats all you've ever saw, been in trouble with the law since the day they was born.

Straight'nin' the curve,
Flat'nin' the hills.
Someday the moutain might get 'em, but the law never will.

Makin' their way,
The only way they know how,
That's just a little bit more than the law will allow.

Just good ol' boys,
Wouldn't change if they could,
Fightin' the system like a true modern day Robin Hood.

song is by Waylon Jennings

Thanks for all the input guys. Those framerails are most likely not going to be in the final version, it is just some steel we had left over from rust repair, so I thought I'd start mocking the truck up at least.

I haven't gotten much done due to being in Crandon for a week for the CORR off road races, but i did manage to get the frame done yesterday.

It is made of 1/2" square tubing cut down the middle. I cut all the angles and welded it back together instead of bending it.

I'm close to getting the cage all brazed, i might get it done tomorrow.

Thumbs up

i think that was my best idea all year for making a frame its good to see other people trying it, i have seen two others since my build that was by peej410 and tank. i was supprised how strong the frame was and i think you will be as well,

its looking good so far keep at it

(need to think of a new idea now for next year)

I didn't work on the cage at all but i got the suspension all put together except for the shocks. I have the shock hoops all made, i just have to braze them to the frame.

I made the lower subframe out of 3/16 inch brakeline.

(Yes the back of the subframe is supposed to be lower than the front)

It flexes really good right now, but the shocks are gonna limit the articulation once i get them on.

Today i finished up the suspension and have a complete rolling chassis, except for the cage.

Here's a poser shot for ya, the battery is just to weight the chassis down a little, it is too light with nothing on it.

I've got nothing against the hard body i just didn't feel like hacking through all that plastic to cut out the bed, and possibly the tailgate (haven't decided yet)

Crawlerman, as for the cage, i'm planning on having something in the back by the tailgate that will support the fenders and also serve as a body mount.

Thanks for all the complements guys, any imput is well appreciated.
