Default My first DIG build (AX-10)

Ok, even though I don't agree DIG should be legal in comp's when 4ws is illegal and reverse is pointed, I had to build one anyway to keep the playing field level.

After reading thru several other dig builds on this site and getting some great ideas, here is my try..

Parts used:
  • 1/2" ID PVC
  • 1/2" Plastic bushing
  • 1/2" Brass bushing
  • 4/40 threaded rod
  • 8/32 threaded rod
  • Two small L-brackets I found at Ace Hardware
  • 2 male shafts
  • 1 female shaft
  • 1/2" hose clamp
  • 1 - pin (not sure of the length)
PLEASE NOTE that cutting all the pieces to length was trial and error and I do not have exact lengths of most of the pieces. But if you do want a specific measurement then PM me and I will try and get it to you.

First thing I did was cut down the pipe to about 2". I also cut the plastic bushing down to about 1/4" and glued it into the pipe. The plastic will be on the end closest to the tranny since very little pressure will be put on that side. I cut a section of 8/32 threaded rod and screwed it into one of the male shafts then shaved off the exposed thread with a dremel so it will spin freely in the other male shaft. Drilled a small hole in the shaft close to the yoke, slightly smaller then the pin and pressed it in so it will not come loose.

I inserted the female shaft into the pipe (with a little grease on it) then I cut a section of the brass bushing off and carefully pressed it into the other end of the pipe. Then I notched the brass and pipe a little bigger then the width of the pin with the dremel. This will retain the female shaft inside the pipe and provide strength when the pin seats into the pipe. Then I used the hose clamp to secure the L-bracket to the pipe.

I then attached the other L-bracket to the chasis and ran my link thru it for support when torqued.

Now I took the stock AX-10 front servo plate and modified it to fit.

Here are some final install pictures from the top and bottom. Takes a bit to adjust the servo and linkage length for proper throw.

Here is a short video of the dig in action. Sorry for the quality, used a cheapy camera. Seems to be working reliably so far, but that is just playing around the house. I plan on doing some more testing this week when I get the time.

Nice build Zardoz! a brass bushing at the rear notched will last longer. Does the front freewheel as well or just rear lock?

I "CAN NOT" take credit for the AXD2, and more will be discussed at a later time after some testing has been done, or the maker desides to talk about it himself.

Wish I could have seen the AX10 Tranny dig, see how similar it is to MY Tranny mounted dig module I am just finishing up the prototype for..

Ran the new dig a few times the last couple days and other then a small problem with the servo mount the dig is working flawlessly. Hoping it will do the same at the comp this weekend.

Just the rear lock, my tx wont allow for three positions on the third channel.

I have not had any issues with the clamp. It holds tight and has not come loose at all. If it ever does loosen I could just JB weld it to the pipe.
