Cool Harley's March Comp rig

The Harley Special

Ok maybe I will use it for April too but.........

Well I finally decided to build a TVP comp rig, my first one (always done tubers before). We have the 2.2 Midwest Challenge coming up on March 1st (only two weeks from today).

So to get everything started I needed a basic shape and design. I wanted a super narrow chassis and a cool looking design. Well to help with the "Coolness" factor of the design by buddy Neal (Freq E Tag) through a general side profile together. He wanted a new chassis too so I said I could get him one too*.

(*Note: This chassis will not be available for sale anywhere, this was just a personal project)

I wraped up the design in about 3 days after I got the initial concept from Neal (which he sent to me in a just few hours after we talked )

Here are the initial renderings:

Well after that work I called up one of my favorite machinists Don at Visionary Fabrication (Billet Works)

I sent him the chassis design files and let him do his thing. Here is one of the pictures he sent me yesterday:

Specs:

Chassis: Harley/Freq Special
Wheelbase: 12.5"
Axles: Axial
Trans: Axial (may have to go to an R2D if I can't get a Dig built in time)
Motor: Integy 45t Lathe motor
ESC: Castle Creations Sidewinder
Battery: Vislero 2100mAh 3s Lipo 15c
BEC: Castle Creations BEC
Wheels: Billetworks Stalkers
Tires: Proline Badlands 2.2
Foams: Kreepy Reds (front) Kreepy Pinks (rear)
Body: ???? HELP!!!!!
Shocks: Traxxas Big Bore XXL's (4") or XL's (3.7")

Option/Hop-up parts:
Aluminum Axle C's
Aluminum Knuckles
Aluminum Strait Axles
TCS 4-link Adapter/Servo Mount
TCS Boomerang

Now I still need to decide exactly how wide I am going to have the skid plate cut, in the model I have it at 75mm which maybe just a hair wider then I am going to decide on.

As of this minute I have almost no parts in hand, everything is in the mail. That means I will have about a week to actually build and "tune" the rig before the comp. I am a no drivin Mo Fo so not that it matters but I would still like to have a rig that will perform as well.

This will be a quick build to say the least.

Right now I am just trying to decide on my suspension setup.

I am going to try 3 different setups before I go ahead and have the skid cut.
  1. Strait lower links outside chassis - Triangulated upper links
  2. Strait lower links inside chassis - Triangulated upper links
  3. Triangulated lower links - Triangulated upper links
Here is the first simulation, I am not 100% sure what happened during the video uploading with the mystery axle.

Here is Number 1:

Here is Number 2:

This setup has almost half an inch less axle sway total (quarter inch per side).

Thats some really cool computer animation. That #1 looks good but maybe a little restricted IMO.

Restricted? As far as articulation? That is completely controlled by me, I could make it go 180* in the model if I wanted. Once I build the rig I will probably limit the articulation to about 45-55 degrees anyway though.

Number 3:

This one has horrible axle steer!!!!!

I may try to straiten the top links and check it again, but otherwise double triangulation is out the window!

Why not triangulate the bottoms and run strait links on top?
Chassis looks cool, reminds me of the BlackJack

Because I would then have to source new upper link mounts. With a crunched two week time line that isn't a great idea.

I might run the simulation on it but I want to minimize the number of specialty parts as much as possible for this event.

**EDIT**

Here is the simulation

It works well but I am going to keep it simple for this comp, maybe when I have more time....

Can't wait to see it put together Josh! You should have your box of goodies midweek. You have the wrong wheels listed though, you have the new and improved Stalkers coming your way. I'll do my best to get you another "trick" or two in the mail before D day.

New wheels are on the left, previous versions or on the right.

Sorry I only saw #1 at the time of my post and the articulation that you chose made it look restricted. I have watched all three again and like #2 the best for what it's worth.

Looks like a killer chassis. Is that 3rd set of side plates the ones for me to test?
