Default AX10 tranny output repair/modification

Well I twisted off my front output of my axial tranny. I wasnt gonna pay 22 bucks plus shipping for the stock junk ones. This will only work with max shafts. I think any other shafts will be to small in diameter. So I looked at all the stuff I have laying around and I came up with this:
Note I used the tube but I would use solid alum or steel tube to reduce the stress on the cross pin inside the tranny you will make. Just make sure you get 5/16 outside diameter.

Tools
Dremel
3/32 drill bit
5/16 drill bit
Drill press

Materials
Maxx shafts
1 ft piece of 5/16x.049 aluminum tube(fits the bearings in tranny perfect)
1 extra dremel carving bit

First off disassemble the tranny. take the out puts off the gear and drill from the back side of the outputs with a 5/16 bit until the out puts fall off. Do this with both outputs.

After you get both the outputs drilled reassemble the outputs into the gear. put the tube through both sides of the gear assembly. I had to break out the dremel and clean the holes I drilled to get the tube to slide through. Put a equal amount of tube on each side.

Now take a small drill bit the size of your cross pin(dremel bit) you decide to use. This pin is going to go through the center of the gear assembly vertically. I used a spare dremel bit for this next step they are made of a strong steel. You are going to drill straight through the center of the gear and make sure to get it centered so it will be straight through the entire assembly. MAKE SURE TO TAKE NOTE OF THE 3 LITTLE ASSEMBLY SCREWS THAT ATTACH THE OUTPUTS TO THE GEAR. Once you get the pin(dremel bit) through hit it with a hammer to tap it into place. I cut the extra ends of the bit off and shaped the ends of it the same as the teeth on the gear. The second picture shows the pin inside the tube once the tranny is assembled

If you havnt assembled the transmission do it now. Take your yokes for your maxx shafts and drill the center out with the 5/16 bit.

Now slide them onto the new aluminum outputs. With a sharpie make your measurement for how much tube you will want out for you maxx shafts to slide onto. Make sure that you leave a very small gap between the yoke and the housing of the transmission so it does not rub. Cut off the extra tube. Here is a picture of how mine looked after I cut the tube to the desired length.

Now you can take the 3/32 drill bit and drill the holes for the yoke pins. Once you have the holes drilled put on your yokes, assemble your tranny and put it back in your truck and go try to break it again.

I hope this will help you figure a way to get around the crappy stock out puts. I suck at giving instructions so If you decide to do this feel free to post up questions or if you think im a freakin idiot you can tell me that to. Enjoy

Thank you! This gives me hope that there's a cure for these output shafts. I just drilled a stock one and don't trust the strength. I'll give this a shot when I get home.

I spent the day abusing my drive train to see how well it would hold up and I have to say that the tranny outputs are no longer my weak link in my drive train. They took all my cobalt 5t could dish out and did not fail. So far so good!!

Great idea , good tutorial too. Question though , what kind of run times are you getting out of the cobalt 5T with what battery.
thanks

I use to use 2 6 cell elite saddle packs ran in parallel. With only one 6 cell saddle pack it would only run 15-20 minutes if I was lucky. I switched to a 8 cell elite saddle pack that gives me about 35-45 minutes run time. I think for best results I need to go lipo.

Ya you could buy something or have the satisfaction of building something better and beefier.
