The Stickies on top of the board explain it and that would be the best place to start; IMHO

• Star-cut the foams. ($0.00) • Lower the ride height 1/4" to 1/2" by inserting spacers over the shock shafts inside the shock body (you will need to remove the rod end and pull the shaft out of the shock to insert the spacers). (<$1.00) • Limit articulation by inserting 1/2" spacers over the shock shafts outside the shock body. (<$1.00) • Put soft springs in front; medium in the rear. (<$12.00) • Replace the steering and suspension links with metal parts. (~$50) • Move the battery over the front axle (saddle pack, low-CG battery/servo plate, custom pack, lipo, etc.) ($varies) • Make your own upper link plate out of plastic and move the ESC to the front upper links. (<$1.00) • Replace the tires with Panther Cougars or Losi Rock Claws (~$45) • Upgrade the steering servo. ($30-$100) • Upgrade the ESC ($80-$120) • Upgrade the radio (up to $320) | |

Ok, any newbies and not so newbies reading this thread. Dont waste your time on the RTR! Learn from my mistake. I have a nice 2.2 scaler that performs great. I picked up an Ax 10 RTR so the kids could drive something cheaper and easier to replace than my handmade scaler. The RTR Got spanked so bad by my Scaler it was pathetic. So I couldn't let it be and next thing I know I am replacing stuff left and right. I shoulda got the ARTR. Oh well. The radio is junk, but you can use it if you are on a budget. I made metal links for the lowers and the steering linkage ( check out the tech section for a how to) I put in a 55turn motor. The stock ESC was so jerky at slow speeds that a cheap $16 ESC I got off Ebay for a boat project worked way better and is in there for now till I can get a better one. ( by the way, I use the Moped ( do a search) in my scaler and for a cheap ( $35 ) ESC it actually works pretty good.) Put wheel weights in and star cut the foams. Thats really just a band aid cause the Rock lizards blow. (again...shoulda got the ARTR) You will want some better tires for comps. Get your battery on the front axle, or if like me you just want to use a bunch of cheap stick packs you allready have, fab up a new battery tray to get the battery as low and up front as possible. The stock shocks can be made to work...but I have some nice aluminum maxx shocks on the way that I got for cheap. So moral of the story, the RTR is a great basher...its not a rock crawler. If you want a rock crawler get the kit or better the ARTR and you can do some budget ebay shopping for what you need. Last edited by slobert; 10-16-2008 at 12:36 AM. |

if you have a old nitro chassis laying around or a piece of sheet aluminum you can use the front servo mount as a template and lengthen it a little and drill a couple of holes inboard and make your own 4 link plates. worked great for me and eliminated those crappy sloppy 3 link mounts at the axle. |

Well I was in excatly the same boat as you, starting with an RTR. I did post a build thread, this is what I have done so far. (note:need updates, allot has changed.) Also note that I am only about $450 into it including buying the RTR kit. Build Thread Along with all the other GREAT suggestions up above you can take a look at what I have done for fairly cheap, and it has had AMAZING results. |
