Default Steering Linkage

Will I have to fabricate a shorter steering linkage if I mount the servo directly over the differential and mount the batteries to each side of the axle?

Ya don't worry you can use the stock linkage it is setup to have the servo over the axle and you can get plates for the axle to use a split cell battery pack, here is a picture of mine to show exactly what you are talking about.
