| 1st Axial (on a budget)
Hi All - I was given a PTI goliath by a buddy a few months back, had a ton of fun with it (first crawler) and finally had to upgrade. I picked up the below Axial (minus wheels/tires shown) for $100.00. Came with chrome drivelines, I believe aftermarketHD lockers, the axial itself, and I also purchased a DNA dig for $60.00 but haven't installed yet. I transfered my 55t motor, tq3 radio equipment, 645 servo and the ESC over. After reading on here a ton, I've done: *moved shocks to the outside on the axle, links to the inside w/ spacer *cut skid plate to run links inside the frame *limited shocks internally *purchased 8 cell battery and moved to front axle *mounted radio equipment on links *moved body posts to top of rig *swapped the white axial springs in *threw on beadlocks with flat irons *lexan wrap-around antenna mount I plan on doing (starting from the top)- and would like any/all suggestions: *Roover tires *instal DNA dig *bent front links *4 link delrin plates F/R *possible swap to all F/R bent delrin links Anything anyone wants to recommend/comment on is appreciated. It runs amazing right now, and I can't beleive the difference from the PTI to this. It's night/day difference. I don't plan on entering comps or anything, it's just for dinkin around in the back yard and taking camping and whatnot. How much $$ I'm into it: Radio equip/servo/charger - free XL5 ESC: $30.00 Body/paint: $25.00 Roller Axial: $100.00 Wheels/tires: $40.00 8 cell battery: $32.00 white springs: free pinion: $5.00 TOTAL $232.00 Not bad I don't think considering that is everything including battery. After dig is installed - $292.00 Here are some pics: This is what it looked like when I received it - minus the wheels/tires This is what it looks like now: Here are some in-action pics of obstacles all of which the PTI couldn't manage to do: Last edited by 06BlackTaco; 09-05-2009 at 03:56 PM. |

Great start dude, make sure when you install the dig, get the CC bec to keep the power flowing to all servos. Perhaps also get a crawler esc likes of rooster crawler, fxr, sidewinder or mamba max, which would be a great imrovement over the XL5. I have a the rooster, but most ppl here tends to go with the FXR lately. I was in excatly the same boat when I first started.

Thanks for the info Mudsy. Do you need the BEC when running a sidewinder? Those seem to be a cheaper option (I think) and have the capability to run lipo (I think) if I ever turn that corner. I heard the Rooster Crawler has the bec already? or no? |

the sidewinder has a bec as well, but its only set to 4.8V IIRC. get an external and set it to 6.0V. and you will be golden. also the SW is an excellent ESC, its what I have on my ax10 and love it. and good looking crawler! |

Yes, I had to use the CC Bec with the rooster crawler, the esc bec dosn't deliver enough voltage for two servos. Just a general rule that all esc should run a CC bec no matter what's the set up is... I learn this the hard way. From now on I'll run all my rigs with CC bec. It's only a $20 insurance...Your esc will thank you for it.

A cheap upgrade for you in my opinion would be a 4 link plate in the rear. It will reduce the torque twist a bit.
